12A Pulse Check....

Hello- Well I went to the junk yard today and found a 12A that had some fresh paint on the front cover and looked really clean... I pulled the engine out and there is a new clutch on the back of the engine... She looks like a recent rebuild...

I have the engine and transmission at home and I am trying to check for life... The engine will spin over and seems to be making nice compression..."blowing hard".... However when I put the compression guage on it...it does not develop any compression.... When you put the plugs in the engine...it go's "thump" "thump"...Sounds like it has compression..............

The questions!!

1.) Is there a good way to truely get 12V to the starter through a jumper cable set up...so I know that the engine is spining over fast enough...

2.) Where can I check for oil pressure? Is there a place to put a mechanical guage in?

You need to install a bell housing in the motor. If you cant find the earlier ones, the pre-RX-7, grab a bad RX-7 tranny and cut the bell housing area (or use a good tranny). This will allow you to install a starter and wire you would normally do. For oil pressure, either on the stock location OR in the rear banjo bolt.

I have the tranny bolted up. Where is the stock location or the banjo bolt or oil pressure?

Banjo bolts are down low on the dip-stick side of the block. Banjo bolts connect the oil cooler line.

the engine has 155-160 pounds of compression...All are even. Thats enough to sustain life right? Next task is to check for oil pressure.... The girlfriend just got here from out of town...so the process is on hold! Any other sugestions as for stuff to look for...?

Holly Springs: what is the name of the yard. did they have a hoist?

I go to the pull a parts but they will not let a jack into the yard and want to charge extra for any bits attached to the engine. I have pulled 3 so far and put one in. Last pull I was down to about 2 hours from a running car to the engine on the truck.

Sir- My Dad posted the last post.... It was the pullapart over in Norcross that we got the engine. My Dad thought we got the engine in Holly springs~! Sorry! Pullapart sells the WHOLE engine...including altinator, starter, carburator for 150 dollars. We used a drive shaft out of a lincon to lift the engine out...

www.pullapart.com If you go on that link it will show you prices. a 4cyl engine is 107 dollars plus $20 dollar core charge. plus tax tag and title.... 150 out the door.

Got it. I go to that one and the one by the airport. but it is just me and my wife so I have never tried to get one.

If you go to the one at the airport the cars are much closer to the entrance, where at norcross you have to walk all the way to the back.
