help with tranny problem

what's up everyone. last night I was out driving, and I ran my 7 up through the gears. I hit third, felt it engage, and hit the gas. my tach went to 8k, but the car didn't accelerate. i could feel the transmission still spinning through the shifter. went to pull the tranny out of third, and it was stuck! i yanked pretty hard and it disengaged, put it back into third, and the tranny engaged, and i went on my merry way. I was hoping that it was just a one time quirk, but i had to make sure. Tonight I went out and hit the freeway to test it. sure enough, under hard acceleration, anything about about 5.5k rpm, third doesn't like to make the car accelerate. could it be that third gear is spinning on the output shaft when i'm accelerating hard? I'm heading to my grandparents house in the morning to do some work on the 7 with their hoist. I bought the car back in july, and I just got it insured and tagged. mods are below. I picked up some fresh tranny and rear end lube the other night, because i'm pretty sure that they are the original fluids that were put in back in '82. A spare tranny with only 75k miles on it was included with the car, so if the problem persists after I replace the fluids, a tranny swap is on the dockett for tomorrow/monday. Thanks for the help.

Mods:
BP 12a
Holly 465
MSD Blaster 2's
Magnacore 8.5mm wires
e-fan
fresh stock clutch/flywheel
Holly Blue pump
-6 A/N (3/8") lines from pump to regulator in engine bay, 5/16" fuel line from regulator to carb
Earl's fuel filter
stripped interior
Bridgestone Potenza RE910 all seasons (previous owner was an idiot) 195/50R15

Oh, and if anyone that would like to feel what the tranny is doing and they live in the Ann Arbor area, pm me and i'll take you for a spin (be warned, seats are uncomfortable and unsafe, and it has 4 point harnesses with no harness bar (once again, previous owner was, and still is, a huge flaming bag of DOUCHE))

Sounds like either the 3rd gear sincros or one of the gear sets are screwed. Its not hard to change the tranny from underneath without removing the engine.

Might want to change the clutch and throwout bearing at the same time if its original or if old.

thanks, i talked to my dad on our way to my grandparents house to work on some cancer (he's an engineer, and he used to be the plant manager for the Ford Wixom, MI rear end plant), and he said that normally gears are keyed to the shafts, and that a key may have worked itself out. I have a spare tranny and access to a hoist, so this winter i'll swap the tranny and see how one with only 75k on it feels. the clutch, bearing, flywheel, master and slave cylinders are all brand new.
