12a performance
Hey i have a question for you 12a guys. a friend of mine has a 1981 12a first gen rx-7 and he is thinking about swaping to a 13bt but it will cost him at least $5700 parts and labour. im trying to convince him to stay with the 12a. I have read the faq and i didn't really get what i wanted. how much would it cost to get a 12a to about 200-250hp. including a rebuild of the engine. he already has exhaust done.
also how does the 12a compare to the 13bt where does it make power up high or in the midrange ect. which is a better streetable car.

13B Engine ($20 in my case) or $1800 from hayes rotary $400 from JunkYard
Turbo Manifold for FD3S on Ebay $120
Custom Intake Fabrication (Baily's Metal Fab) $300
Holley 650 ebay $127
T-4 Flange Turbo Ebay $188
12A Front Cover $25 Salvage
12A Oil Pan $20 Salvage
12A Dizzy with Ingitors $15 Salvage
Gaskets Napa $45
Hyalomar Sealant Napa $5
Custom Carb Hood (Bailys Metal Fab) $175
Misc Piping Mitchell Iron $35
Total Cost $1075 or $2855
Experiencing 16 PSI at 8,000 RPM.......PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!
This swap can be done by the average jackass in 18 hours with a basic $100 set of tools from craftsman. Plus a freaking $200 Engine Hoist (which you can rent!)...... Any APE with a haynes manual can swap this...........Your nuts man. Not to sound like an *** or anything, but use your head not your wallet on this one! Its just too easy....Kinda like rebuilding a rotary.....once you do it you wonder why you pay somebody to do it for you!

Some people don't have the space to do work on a car. Personally I think anyone who actually pays a mechanic to do an engine swap is wasting money. If you know how to read, you can swap an engine.
