Start by disconnecting wires. There are 2 thick wires from the battery (pos to the starter, neg to the bellhousing or block), as well as the smaller wires for reverse (a pair of bullet connectors) starter solenoid, etc.
Unscrew the speedo drive cable from the driver's side of the tranny.
Unbolt the driveshaft, let it drop to the floor, and slide to the rear. If you didn't drain the tranny, you'll start losing oil from the tranny here, so be prepared.
Remove the shifter from inside the car - 3 10mm bolts, then give it a good yank straight up.
Place a jack under the tranny and unbolt the tranny crossmember from the car (black steel, 2-feet long, runs under the tranny). The tranny will settle onto the jack.
Your tranny is now free of the car.

Also, put the front of the car on jackstands. I like to put the jackstands as high as possible. Also seal the end of the tranny or you'll get tranny fluid all over once it's in the air. Take out the radiator, radiator supports and remove the fan blade. This will give you movr room to put the engine forward so the angle of the engine and trans isn't so steep. And don't forget to remove the starter. I like to remove the entire starter with the wiring attached. You could just remove the wiring though.

Just the engine and trans cross memebers.
