12a motor into 2nd gen body?

Did some simple searching, didnt find what I was looking for.

I have the opportunity to get an 88 convertible 5 speed needing a motor. Will my 12a fit in and bolt up or is this not possible?

I imagine I will need to change the wiring harness (carb'd motor into a fuel injected car), but thats not a big deal. I'm more worried about physical size limitations and if it will fit and bolt up.

Thanks

No. The 12A mounts by the front cover, the FC mounts bolt to the center housing.

You'd have to make a front brace for it.

Besides, it would be dog slow . I outrun the 2nd gen N/A's all the time in my stock 85 GSL, and they have the bigger 13B FI engine .

The convertibles were the slowest production RX-7s anyhow.

Not by the numbers.

At least you can let the top down.

I'm not looking for a speed demon by any means, just another project car.

I already have a modded 97 GTP that is a daily driver that has the speed...

I'd just look for another 13B 6 port for it.

I would Love a Convertable 2nd gen a daily driver. Streetport it and you will still outrun any Ricer you find, Despite the weight.

If a 13B will bolt into a 1G body with the substitution of a 12A front cover, couldn't you theoretically put a 13B front cover on a 12A to make it bolt into a 2G body? Not that I would advise doing it, it is illegal (not legal to swap a motor older then then the car into it), it will be harder to pass the newer emissions laws with the old carburated engine, and it will be weak (pathetically weak, like CRX HF weak). It would be neat to see, however.

It's more than a front cover, it's also an Oil Pan. The 2nd gens mount through rte oil pan. When you put a 13B into a 1st gen, you need a SE Oil pan.

If you were to use the 13B cover, there would be no mounts on it at all!

The old 4-port 13B covers had the front mounts.

The mounts are under the oil pan, and on the center housing.... so the only way to mount a 12A, is to build a custom mount. Definately not worth the effort IMO.

Sounds good to me. Then we'll take the next step and put a 10a into a nice FD! Or maybe an early NSU rotary into an Rx-8...

Good luck in your quest to never be able to reach posted speed limits again. May the wind never disturb you hair in the vert!

lol.. the 12a is 100 hp.. the rx7 is not a heavy car by any means.

Hell, I drove a subaru brat for the longest time.. 70 some horsepower, 4 wheel drive..

IF i were looking for a speed demon, I definitely wouldnt be looking at any 1st or 2nd gen Rx7 without serious mods.

I just wanted something to work on this winter in my garage.

Oh well, the quest for a good gen 1 body continues.

Thanks all, even those that provided sarcasm and humor.

Manntis, why does that box have airholes? Are you using riceboys to smuggle exotic pets or something?

Wink

Lol.. it would probably be more reliable..

oops, did I say that out loud?

Guess my best bet would be to put this engine and tranny up on the for sale/for trade forum and get a good running 13b motor to drop in the convert..

I am having a hell of a time finding a good looking gen 1 body, let alone any gen 1 body here in Kansas. There is a guy in Beloit who has one, but thats like a 4 hour drive each way normally, longer if I have to rent a trailer and trailer the trade car out to him and trailer one back.
