12A coolant passage block off

what are you guys that have block the coolant flow through the intake manifold, using to block it off i heard quarters and such what what are you how is it done. i was think like this correct me where its needed.

1. put orings on engine side
2. then put quarter
3. then intake gasket
4. intake

is this the right order, is there another way of doing this?

don't use quarters, do it the right way and get a pair of 20mm freeze out plugs and stick those in the engine side, if done right that will last as long as anything else on there.

I take it your switching to an after market intake manifold. I honestly wouldnt even block it off with anything special. Just use the rubber o rings and bolt the manifold up. I never used quaters or plugs.

use quarters, then use that gas tank putty or similar to completely seal it.

you could use quarters if you really want to and as said above seal it with some kind of sealant. I prefer to use freeze plugs, both my fb's have been running them for years with no problems, either solution works though. The only concern is that in the extreme cold of winter here in NJ it take forever for the manifold/carb to get up to temperature and hence takes forever for the idle to smooth out. Not an issue for you cali guys though

I used freeze plugs worked awesome. When I tried using quaters and JB weld, well it didn't work at all, just made a mess. Do it once and don't look back!

20mm freeze plugs, Dorman, part #555-101. Clean hole, use a Q-tip to spread J-B Weld around the opening, find a socket that fits inside the lip of the plug, use an extension and socket to tap plug in. Drive until at least 1/8" below flush, apply more JB at the joint. Done. I run an aftermarket carb, so I don't need the carb heating. Now I can remove the intake without partially draining the cooling system.

Local parts store has these for $0.49 each. Sure, that's 2 quarters, but they won't slip or leak, no matter how many times the intake comes off.

I seriously doubt your going to notice any performance gain from this "mod" I am sure however that you will see less MPG. Not sure if its a worthy mod in the first place IMO. Theres a reason mazda heated the intakes.... Unless your going with a heavily modded motor, I would just leave it alone. Is losing 2mpg really worth a 1/10 of a HP?

Might as well throw in a hollowed out thermostat and run your electric fan all the time too. Then you'll be running at 130* and be getting 12mpg city and 17 highway like me. Before the rat nest removal and smog removal's as well as the above mods, I was netting about 25-26 highway. Sure I probably have a car thats little faster, but it's still a dog. Wish I would have just left mine alone!

Oh well, live and learn.

I didnt relize this was a "performance" mod. Seems like more of a hassle than what its worth. Keep us posted on your results.

Idea being cooler air makes more power, so stop hot coolant from circulating through the intake and you'll make a "butt-hair" or two more HP, but not worth the MPG loss trade off IMO.
