100 in first gear
hey i hear some loud popping sounds (backfire) after i go 80-100 in first gear..
is this normal for a rotary engine?
i have automatic..
my friends said it was normal
i drive her like a manual now..
like downshifting too at the stop lights..
is this bad for the engine or no?
sorry ima newbie
AND DAMN MY CAR IS URNING OUT GREAT!!
my interior is 80% done.. iTS SO ****** nice..
chrome and black is my motif..
my mechanic also fixed the "play" in my steering in just 5 mins.. he tighnted some bolts on the hood.. (steering area)
i managed to put a GT grant steering wheel on there .. i had to get a custom boss/hub kit for it..
anyways thanx for the help guys..

I hope he didn't cheat and do it the quick and dirty way, if so your steering will be back to what it was (or worse) in short order. 100 in first ! I've never seen an auto first gen around here, weird. About downshifting an automatic, brakes are cheaper than tranny...something to keep in mind. Later.

automatics generally have taller gearing than manuals, due to the torque converter... easier to get the car moving or whatever.. I dunno
downshifting an auto = rice, never forget that
when downshifting (especially at high rpms) an auto and using it to slow the vehicle the transmission undergoes serious strain, hydraulic pressures skyrocket... that said, when I was younger... I did it all the time in my '98 cavalier.. never hurt anything. So, you should be ok. Neutral drops, however, are VERY BAD.. don't do them unless you like replacing transmissions...

It's not that impossible, assuming a stockish tires size, the gear difference between a stick and an auto could easily make this possible
RX-7 auto 84 2.458 1.458 1.000 0.720 3.909
RX-7 84p 3.622 2.186 1.419 1.000 0.807 3.933
Speeds at 7-8K RPM are 50-57 mph and 34-39 mps respectively. I doubt he would ever get to the end of 4th gear as the speed would be near 196 Mph, lol.

the auto's are only 3 speeds aint they?
so it would have a longer first than a 5 speed
i can get 80km/h out of my 1st but thats red lining the *** out of it.. (rest asured i try not to do this often..)

It's the "Worlds Largest Rotary Community"
not "The United States Of America's Largest Rotary Community"
AND, I hate to break it to you, you're the only country that's still using the imperial system (mph, ft/lbs, feet, inches, miles, ounces, etc etc..). All the other countries on here are using the Metric system
(km/h, millimeters, meters, litres, etc etc.)
Australia, Japan, Canada, the UK... all of those use the metric system... I don't know for sure about all the smaller countries, but that's enough for a majority

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly that the metric system rocks. But for the same reason a "metric" time system never caught on, I'll switch to metric when you pry my mph out of my dead, cold fingers
The metric system was invented by a man who wanted to say "my ***** isn't small - it's 12 cm! and we all know that 12 is more than 8!"
But yes, try and remember that this is a world-wide community here and share the love
