Well I knew it was gonna be slow at work today so I brought my front suspension to work to replace the front ball joints, front control arm bushings, and front strut cartridges...I now know why mazda says the ball joints are not serviceable...I ended up having to put a tack on both ball joints to make sure they will stay put as upon removal the bores were no longer round, but oval...they were murder to get out.
But its done...

Replaced all the (original, date-stamped 1979) hoses connecting the gas tank. Cleaned 30 years of accumulated dirt off the tank and the tank shields. Replaced the (falling apart, age rotted) vapor valve on top the tank. Put the tank back on.
Gave her a wash.
Tuning session tonight. Smog test tomorrow probably.

I got my RB presilencer-less streetport exhaust system made up, and installed today for my 85 GS. sounds awesome, just like a rotary should.

Seriously, you cannot make this $#!t up...
So, I get off work early with the boss' blessing (by way of skipping my lunch hour - the joys of being salaried), for to take the shiny object to the smog place.
I open the hood for one last leak check, since the drive in to work is the first time it's gone more than 4 miles since I finished all this construction work. All good, no leaks, coolant bottle still nominal. Bitchin'. Fire her up, vroom.
I drive about 45 minutes to a smog place recommended my a fellow West region forum member, as being a decent place that offers free retests, run by fellow car guys. Uneventful drive though a bit warm with no AC, which I need to get used to again.
I pull in, negotiate the deal, sign the paperwork, and drive onto the dyno. The mechanic asks me to open the hood, so I reach down to the cable release handle and give her that same gentle tug I'd delivered less than an hour ago.
Nothing happens. The handle slides as if it's connected to nothing.
I try a couple more times, convinced insanely & against all logic and physics that if a simple, direct cable release didn't work the first time, it might magically work the tenth.
Nope. No hood opening. No resistance at the handle. No access to the mechanism, either.
No smog check.
So, home I drive. I'm waiting for the car to cool a bit before I start trying to figure out how in the hell to open the hood without the handle. I'm HOPING agains t all hope that the break (if there is ne) is right at the handle, and I can pull the remaining cable with a pair of pliers and open the hood.
Anyone taking odds?
And anyone nearby happen to maybe have a spare?
I'm laughing, because it seems to help stop the screaming.

dropped my oil pan finally to swap it out only to find this...

I have another to swap on, but wondering still what caused this. Tomorrow is a clean up of mating surfaces and on with another oil pan. To get this one out I ended up dropping the steering linkage, undoing the exhausst header, and motor mounts and jacking up the drivetrain from the trans bellhousing...cake.
As for what got done tonight...yes night...

Nope, this pretty much puts paid to going to the Vegas show; even if I'm able to get it fixed tomorrow night, that leaves only Thursday to get smogged AND if I pass, to also submit paperwork to the damn Gov't & get my sticker... and I have stuff at work that must be done Thursday, plus I have to go sign our Re-Fi papers at lunch Thursday too.
Essentially, I'm one day short. Because I don't have time to get the State's permission to drive my own frakking car.
Bitter? Not much.
I've been able to see a pic of the latch as it sits (I faked up a video periscope); the cable looks intact, but it has popped completely free of it's attaching points. There's a chance that one of the springs in the latch broke, but I can't make that part out.
Essentially, I'm one day short. Because I don't have time to get the State's permission to drive my own frakking car.
Bitter? Not much.

Thanks, and grats on your 1000th post. I'll be updating my build thread with details as I work through this.
It's clear Mazda made NO provisions for failure/disconnect of the hood release cable. The FSM only mentions the latch in terms of adjusting its position. Something that nobody anticipated.

Thanks I just noticed too...I feel for you...sucks after all that work to get beat by a hood latch. I don't think any manufacturer makes provision for failed hood latch mechanisms. We get them in the shop on newer cars from time to time and usually invoves grill removal and prybars lol. Mazda totally screwed us by having the hood open in the opposite direction. Ironically it is one of the features I like most about older mazdas.
Best bet is use your camera rig and see if you can go under and catch the release with a wire hanger or other.
