Ugh flat tire

So I got a flat one day. It was a slow leak, and I would only have to inflate it back up like once every 2 weeks or so. Well lately it has gotten bad and if I do not drive the car it will go flat in 3 days. So I went out and got a tire patch kit, the kind where the tire has to be OFF the wheel to do it. I don't like the plug kits.

So now here is the dilemma: How do I break the bead?

I got the air all out of the tire. I do not want to go to Pep Boys to get it off because they will fubar my wheel (ask me how I know).

I tried standing on the edges and jumping on it to no avail. I am contemplating on just sticking it under the drum rear and slowly lowering the car until it pops off, but I would rather hear another sane way to do it

Any input? I chose the non-tech section because this is related to my Protege.

Proxes4's are the best!

When I had my wheels powder coated, I took them to Walmart to have the tires dismounted. I think it was like $1.50 per wheel.

I have not tried this, but I know in the 4X4 world, you an run a tire (attached to a vehicle) onto the flat tire to break the bead. Bettr to use a tire than the brake drum, which may damage the flat tire.

You can also lay out a 2x4 onto the tire sidewall and slowly drive a car onto the 2x4...

Kind of like this:

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me Stu but do me a favor and when you lower it down keep your thumb way away from the tire

BFRH usually works for me. i've dismounted tires by hand lots of times. good stress reliever. but the plugs work great. they're much better than they were in the old days.

Why didn't you just get the repair kit that has the fuzzy rubber plugs that you insert? So much simpler to use, and they work great for nails etc. that you might pick up. Two minutes of work, air it up, and you're done...

Take it to Discount Tire. The cost of a patch there is probably less than what it would cost you in time, headaches, and broken body parts.

The nail is literally embedded deep into the tire. I cannot even get a pair of pliers in there!

I just had a flat last week, luckily it was a valve stem and Discount replaced it for free.

Drive it the rest of the way through, and then use a plug to patch it?

Good luck man...

It's nice to hear of a dealership that can do something right for once.
Glad you got it worked out....
