we all know these cars did not get real good gas mileage for their size but my mileage is crazy.

I get about 14 miles to the gallon or worse...... It sucks up the gas real bad. My question is this:

What can I do to get this back to ...or close to acceptable miles/gallon?

can the fuel pump be adjusted???
is there an adjustment in the engine compartment?

lastly ...what I don't want to do ( cause I dont know how to do it ) is have the injectors
re-done.. I suspect they are leaky ..The car usually wants to flood rather easy. Every time I start car, it is borderline flooding... It did flood a few times but now I seem to be able to just avoid it flooding cause I know not what to do.. ..Does that mean the injectors leak??

let me know what you think I should do first...

Bad injectors will put the MPG into the toilet, and fast. Even worse, when they are causing the engine to run mega-rich and the cats are still in use, the cats will plug up rather quickly, compounding the problem.

 

o2 sensor matters too

Whens the last time you did a tune up anyways? Might as well and see what happens. Pull the injectors and get them sonic cleaned. Send them to rc engineering or somewhere likewise that will test the flow/pulse/spray pattern and clean them for not too much money.

Hey Chris,

Sorry to hear about the troubles. Is this the "new" GSL-SE (the one with low miles)? Maybe you have bought another since I last heard.

I think these guys are on the right track. The easiest thing would be to start with the fuel pressure (like we did on the red car) and check the basic stuff (timing, condition of plugs, wires, etc.).

The O2 sensor isn't bad to change and isn't expensive. They can sometimes get a bit stuck and hard to get out, but otherwise are fairly simple to change.

For the injectors, you have to pull the intake off to get at them. Then send off to get cleaned and then re-install. If you remember, it is like we did on the black car, I believe. Remember how much fun it was getting that intake gasket off when we were out in the heat??

The other possibility is the coolant temp sensor in the back of the water pump. It detects the coolant temp and the ECU adjusts the mixture based on it. The connector on that one tends to crumble over the years from the heat, but usually if it comes loose, the car will flood so bad that it won't even run (or just barely run). Sensor could still be bad and is pretty easy to check.

Anyway, I'd be happy to come down sometime and help you out.

Thats my car now and after some TLC It is getting around 24-26 average MPG on my 36 mile daily commute.


Switching from the Bosch 11027 universal o2 sensor that was on the car to a NTK (NGK) 24006 exact fit sensor was worth nearly 7 mpg.

The NTK is as close to the OEM sensor as ive been able to locate, and its cheap. 32.99 at advance auto, compared to the 17.99 "universal" sensor.

It DOES take a couple days to get one after the order, but if you're gonna buy one thats the one you want!

The car that really sucks the gas Kent is the grey car we had so much fun replacing the tranny on..Remember that day !! ...Had to be 100 degrees. By the way , that tranny still going fine even though it has a bit of a noise...Will just run it until it dies...maybe it won't,who knows.

As wankel=awesome said ( and as others have said) o2 sensor..will get the NTK as you recommend...will go to advance auto and get that asap and install. The car has new wires, plugs, cap etc..

Kent---It would be great if you could come down. My white ( low mileage ) car has a very very low idle and I think I have a gasket leak somewhere too . I replaced the plugs , wires etc but I need a pro to tune the car ( set idles ,timing etc..) I remember you had this little tool or electrical part you plugged in to set something on my black rx7. after you did that, the car ran perfect. ....ifyou could ever come down...that would be awesome....anytime you can!!
I am also running NGK plugs BR9...may change those to BR8.

I bet that tool is the TPS tool. I actually made one myself.

 

Correct. I made my own too.

Chris: There is no way to adjust the fuel pressure, but we can test it. It should be around 30 psi, but I have seen cases where the regulator failed and the pressure went to 65 psi.

Could be leaky injectors, etc.

I figure that maybe we wait on the injectors (unless you want to do them) and maybe try the other things first. However, pulling the intake (to do the injectors) does make it easier to check/replace the coolant sensor in the back of the WP.

hmmm....well...I think I will just go ahead and replace the o2 sensor and check the coolant temp sensor to see if it is indeed attached and if it is crumbling as you say it might. I am going to try and replace that too.. after doing that, will see how it does... I am also guessing the fule pressure may be off as well as theTPS out of wack...anyway....you know what you are doing, I am still learning...

awesome= wankel said the spark plugs should be BR8, not BR9...better gas mileage with the BR8 ( spark plug # )...I may do that too...

I will then pull the intake and pull injectors to clean if I get no positive results...thats where I get a little shakey on what I am doing... I will likely do that last ......thanks for info and input...

if you can come down some time to work tuning up my low mileage white 7 etc...that would be greatit has a very very very low idle...runs a little rough and it hear a slight put put put which may be an exhaust gasket leak in engine area...not sure...

anyway...its all good and I love playing with these cars...

BUR8-EQ14 And yes it makes a little difference on the heat range, but only if everything else if functioning correctly as well.
