Some Carb Questions

Hey all.

As I’m still a student, I don’t have as much time to set aside for the car as I’d like, so I’ve spent the past few months mainly cleaning the carb, and I thought I had everything figured out and was basically done with it, when I was finally looking deeper into the PDF’s on foxed.ca for the 1st gen carbs and found something that kinda made my heart sink…

But before I get to that, I’ll explain a little bit about the car. It’s a ‘79, and when I got it, the previous guy had put an FB fender on the driver’s side, which is an important thing to note for later on lol. Other than some wiring that was cut up or spliced, the car was pretty much untouched.

At the beginning of this month I bought a parts car, also a ‘79, although I think it’s a GS vs. mine being an S, and believe me, I wouldn’t have made it into a parts car if it weren’t for its condition…

It’s so heartbreaking honestly… but I got the two-spoke I wanted!!!!

Guy had been growing a garden in there…

Apparently it had been stolen 30 years ago, hence the ignition crap hanging down lol. It sat outside the entire time, and whoever stole the car also took the 12a out and set it alongside the car, so they both sat together for 30 years….. The driver side window was also left open, which is why there’s currently weeds growing in the carpet……… Sooo that’s why I bought a GS with twenty-thousand original miles on the clock….. for parts….

But anyway, the parts rx7 still has the carb with it, though seized up and is corroding all over, so when I was looking at those PDF’s, I started realizing something. The whole time I had been rebuilding my carb and watching videos and looking at diagrams, I kept seeing ‘79 carbs that look like the spare one I have from the parts car, but none seemed to perfectly match the one I have on my silver car. So when looking through that rebuild manual, I realized that there’s a possibility that the previous owner, aside from putting in the FB fender, also put on an FB/later year carb…..

From the way he had been talking though, he made it sound like it was the original carb, and it definitely had a lotttt of grease built up on it, just like the intake manifold and the lower end of the engine, so if it had been swapped at one point, it must have been a long time ago, as there weren’t any signs of it having been removed. But anyway, comparing my carb to the carbs in the rebuild manual, it looks like mine might be an 84-85:

The top of the high altitude compensator has those two stems which are on my carb, making it an 84-85. The front air vent solenoid (no. 10) is the same shape as on my carb, and then the choke assembly is the same as mine, so I figured my ‘79 rx7 had an 84/85 carb……

But, because I had fully cleaned my carb and was going to bolt it back on, I tried my best at putting back together the rats nest without a perfect set of diagrams to help me lol. I was using the Haynes manual though, as well as a pic I found in a thread for a ‘79 here on the forum. So that was another thing I needed from you 12a wizards: a good judging of my rebuild job haha, and a few tips on the things I messed up.

So, that was a lot, sorry, but here’s everything in summary:
  • Idk what carb I have, and I need to know if a ‘79 could possibly come from the factory with the carb I do have
  • I need some help on my emissions and carb rebuild job
  • If my carb isn’t possibly a ‘79 varient, could it still work with a ‘79 emissions setup and wiring harness?
  • If not, should I just send out my spare ‘79 carb to get some love?

Here’s the spare carb in its current condition:

These pics don’t show its true condition lol, but it’s pretty bad, and again, seized up.

And then finally, here are some pics of my rebuilt carb with all the lovely emissions stuff:

Please let me know if you need more pictures : )

Wow, sorry this became so long, just a lot of confusing things I guess haha, anyway, thanks so much for reading, any help from you guys would be much appreciated : )

Thanks,
-Pascal

Oh wait also, I just realized, when removing the carb, I found that the insulator plate/carb spacer (whatever ya wanna call it) had been stripped of the original gasket and someone attempted to use the rebuild kit gaskets. I got one from my parts car that was in-tact so I’m just using that to be safe, as I previously attempted to fix the messed up one with new gaskets. But I was realizing that maybe the carb was swapped with a newer one, as someone obviously tampered with the spacer plate.
