OK , Ive been able to almost answer my own question from various threads but still cant confirm SA pitch

SA = 10 mm dia x ? pitch
FB = 12 mm dia x 1.5 pitch

S4 = 12 mm dia x 1.5 pitch
S5 = 10 mm dia x 1.25 pitch

FD = ?

SA pitch is 1.25, sir.

I have an S5 **** that fits just as nicely as my stock SA ****. Bought it before I was able to finally locate a good stock unit. Fits perfect, but it's too heavy given the long throw of the SA lever - - makes you overshoot 3rd.

OK , heres the list

SA = 10 mm dia x 1.25 pitch
FB = 12 mm dia x 1.5 pitch

FC S4 = 12 mm dia x 1.5 pitch
FC S5 = 10 mm dia x 1.25 pitch

FD = 10 mm dia x 1.25 pitch

FE RX8 = 10 mm dia x 1.25 pitch

Protege / Mazda 3 = 10 mm dia x 1.25 pitch

Miata = 10 mm dia x 1.25 pitch

( I guess mazda eventually figured out the SA had the best dia / pitch , SA's rule !)

I thought my SA GS had leather, until I cleaned it, and found out it was almost 30 years of sweat and dead skin cells baked in the hot Texas sun. technically leather wrapped?

In Texas, that'd pass for leather, yeah.

From ebay.... billiard ball quality, gives the "short throw" feel. Get's a bit more red out of the interior too!

It came with and adapter for pitch, which was right (the 2nd time) but had to really did to find the right pitch for the lock nut on the bottom below the know.

This is real important: it's not just pitch size, but note that it is FINE pitch. Went thru every bin at the local hardware stores and couldn't find the right one. Real pain in the ***. Even went to the fastener place who didn't stock the size. They sent me to some old school place just outside of Detroit that had one.

I've been thinking about ordering an FD **** for my series 2 ("FB"). I like the **** in my series 8 and it seems to be almost an identical shape to the Series 2. I haven't tried the **** from the FD on the FB but I guess from the above it won't fit.
My FB **** is in poor condition and I'd like to replace it. Is the SA shifter stalk the same as the FB stalk from the ****-end () down? I could swap for an SA stalk then to fit an FD ****.

Sadly, no... SA shift lever is mechanically different, as is the SA trans. Which is why short-shifters made for the FBs won't work for an SA.

Overall length, ball diameter, throw, end bushing details all differ.

[OFFTOPIC]

Man, those two gauges look PERFECT in that ashtray location.
Talk about a stealth GSL-SE Turbo...

Are they shallow depth? Or regular full depth gauges?

I checked the threads of the FB vs FD - it should be possible to drill out an FD **** and re-tap it to FB spec, depending on the material used in the ****. For a 12mm thread you use a 10.2mm tapping drill, this should remove the existing thread leaving a clean shaft for the tapping.

Rolled this off the lathe about 2 years ago. Made a matching choke ****.

One of these days I should get the short shifter! If other things stop breaking I can UPGRADE again lol.

BTW, has anyone found a way to change the 6 speed **** from the RX-8 to a 5 speed? Is there a sticker or something that would last? I want one, but I couldn't stand looking at a 6 speed **** in my 5 speed 7 all day (Yes, I am in my car all day )

Most people buy the JDM or Euro spec RX8 ****, they were available with 5 speeds as well.

A little more driving experience, and you won't have to look at the shift pattern all day. You'll just know where the gears are.
