I haven't even seen a concept pic I'll believe yet. Released sheet-metal never, EVER looks remotely like the concept cars. I've been disappointed too many times by flashy concepts that turned into pug-ugly product to ever believe it till I see it again.

And yes, I WAS born in Missouri.

I'll be about due for a new DD in 2013; the Z will be 10 years old by then, and up around 120k, 130k miles. She's holding up right well, thus far.

We'll see what they actually roll out, though. Been promised a 'new RX-7' without result for about a decade now.

& if it still has those goofy super-high front fenders, no thanks. I won't drive a cartoon car.

I'm with ya on that. I'm from "misery" as well and I won't judge it until I see it.

The good side is it will make the rx8 prices drop quickly so I can snag a good used
one on the cheap.

All the RX-8 needs is a turbo to be a fantastic car. I'd love to pick one up eventually.

A REAL rotary sports car (light weight, two door, two seater) would be called a fourth generation RX-7, not an RX-9, don't you think?

It makes sense to me that any future two seater rotary mazda would be launched as a new RX-7 . The two-seater rotary is a Brand that is separate from all other RX models . Branding takes a lot of investment and is not usually taken lightly by large corporations. I think it will happen, once they figure out what the best next step from the 1st gen, 2nd gen , 3rd gen progression is .

Wouldn't surprise me if it will be built with a convertible option to compete with vettes, z, etc.

That would be sensible, and cleanly logical, Ray... but we're talking about MARKETING people here.

The same ones who decided the US didn't need any more RX-7's after '95(?), but the rest of the world did.

All of you just are jealous over the Renesis motor and the 8 out handling all the past rotaries.

Uhm, no. Had the chance to buy a first-year -8; passed it up for a first-year 350Z instead.

A full-on sports coupe, you know.

Like my -7.

that's funny, i did the exact opposite.

shortly after i crashed my '84, i actually had every intention to buy a 350Z back in 2007. i drove the it and i liked it a lot. however, i also felt like something was missing. i honestly had no true interest in the Rx-8 (my second choice at the time was a used E46 M3), but my girlfriend encouraged me to drive it. i did ... and i found myself signing a whole bunch of papers within the hour.

in all honesty, i find the Rx-8 to be a bit gimmicky - always have, and even though i've grown to love it, i still do. however, it won me over in the part that counts. it's a damn fun car to drive and at least to me, the Z fell short of that, comparatively speaking.

that said, the Renesis is a jewel, but the Rx-8 as a car, leaves something to be desired. i just find some of the things Mazda did with it to be ... well ... dumb. i won't lie, i do find myself sometimes wishing i had bought the Z or the M3, especially when my 8 was down for about 9 months.

That wasn't a marketing decision, that was a financial decision based on the sales of cars like the RX7, Supra TT and 300ZX along with the U.S consumer's desire to buy large SUV's and not 2 seat sports cars. In 1995 the RX7 was a $40K plus car (sticker, not actual sale price) and the Supra etc was even more. Which made cars in that segment a luxury.

Ford is also a major part of the decision making process at Mazda which is why the RX8 has 4 doors and a back seat and would not exist if it were entirely up to them .

Having said that there's no need to feel sorry for anyone with an RX8, because if there were no RX8 sales there would be no more rotary anything on the horizon.

Agreed, the ugly duckling fenders and that stupid grin have got to go (one reason I like my MP5 way better than the current Mazda 3) but this photo, from the other link, doesn't look too bad. 'Course it might just be the camera angle

All they need to do is put a retro FB nose on that thing (including the pop up headlights, of course) and keep it under $24,000, it would sell like hot cakes.

I like the front fenders, if it sold for $24000 and got 25mpg on the highway I would dump my speed3 for it.

the car has no character what so ever. the lines are not great and it has that modern jelly bean look. just not a fan. sorry guys, i'm stuck in a time when each car looked unique and had its own character..not a facelited body and 25" wheels..

You know Dave, you're right. There's just no replacing a 1st gen RX-7.

It simply can't be done for a dozen reasons, starting with the proven fact that the SA/FB platform was the best ever conceived.

All the concepts I've seen are horrid. I'm not drinking the 1st gen "kool-aid" like some of you (even though I cherish my turbo FB above all things) but the 1st gen was a really excellent looking car. The FC, though not as hot as an FB, was also beautiful if done well. The FD looks unreal parked next to just about anything save other superb designs like an NSX for example.

All these concepts are just... bleh... Performance edition of a mazda 3 look a likes. I want that exotic, dangerous, Japanese Ferrari look back.
