The paint is wearing through from 40 years of oxidation and wear.
why not hit it with 2 cans of Rustoleum gloss enamel ($10), some ammonia and water, instead of one grand special touch, omega glaze, special touch, blitz wax (~$100) ?????
the whole car? i think you would need more than 2 cans, way more.
i just did a guitar with rustoleum and it turned out great. my tack rag wasn't clean, so instead of starting over i wet sanded it, and polished it, and its quite good.
on a car i think it would be a little soft/delicate, but ymmv!
As much as my skin crawls at not using quality products, I also get it. Years back I was going to paint an 81. Just black. Dude I worked with knew somebody. I was all about getting a urethane but was handed an enamel instead. It was an OK paint job. just not the black so deep you can hear Ian Curtis singing to you from the beyond.
I have a Geo Tracker that is/was a daily. 4x4, ragtop, manual. Modest economy, It needs paint as well. I feel the correct answer is duplicator paint shop line. yet I am in an area that murders colors. so UV steadfastness is a prime concern
we always take the race cars to maaco/earl schieb/miracle it was $400 in the before times, and comes out pretty good (i've seen much more expensive paint jobs which were worse)
my FC got painted there too, like 5 years ago and its starting to show its age, but for $400 i'm ok with that (hood came from the driving range apparently)
i did the sunroof myself, and i'm not sure why but it turned out bad
We painted a friend's car in the 80's, he was happy with whatever there was enough of in storage. He left very happy with a solid purple Lincoln Continental, rocking the optional ball fringe.
It was like this one but, you know, really purple.
spent 1 1/2 hours polishing the old faded rusto rattle can paint on the hood with meguiar's mirror glaze 7 and a ton of elbow grease. The best thing about the mirror glaze 7 is that it didn't nuke my liver like turtle wax and one grand omega glaze does.
Would have been less work, less $, and looked better if I washed it with ammonia and water, and then sprayed another coat of rusto enamel
And the meguiar's mirror glaze 7 lasts only a week or two unless you top coat it with a carnauba wax. Meguiars and Auto Geek YT vid says the mirror glaze works best if you leave it on over night, so it can soak into the paint. We'll see?
If you think you know what you're spraying onto and the two paints are compatible, sure, it's a good solution. But for anyone reading this who doesn't know what they're doing, there's always chance that the solvents in whatever you're spraying will eat into the layers beneath.
As someone who paints a lot with rattle cans, don't use Rustoleum, buy some duplicolor and 2k clear coat and use that. Rustoleum is garbage IMO unless you are painting things that will be heavily touched. As for the idea of just slapping clear on top of the paint, if your paint is a solid color, sand it down to the color coat and buy some 2k clear, if its metallic, you have to respray it, there is no way around it I painted that front fender with five cans of duplicolor lunar mist ( 10$ a can) ( or three cans of your custom color, which will run you about 80-90$) and ONE can of 2k max glamour clear coat for 25$. Outside, in the shade. Waited a week, without touching it, then washed it, and then I hand wet sanded it with 2000 grit until it was matte and I could see any more glossy points, then hand wet-sanded again with 2500 grit one more time lightly. Then I got some cheap turtle wax buffing compound and a cheap harbor freight ultra fine pad, and buffed it out with a buffer on low speed. Took me about 10 hours' worth of work. People wanna go big with the stupid spray gun they have never used and end up making a huge mess with pinholes, heavy orange peel, and whatnot. I recommend using the big spray gun for the final mist coat on metallic coats only to hide any stripes you made, although you shouldn't have any if you sprayed the correct length away and waited for the last layer to flash. Could I in theory have saved about 20$ in the paint with a spray gun, yes? Do I have any idea how to use one, no, and I would NOT expect decent results on his first try. I learned to paint with rattle cans on Hotwheels, I'm sure you can find some bits to paint to find out how to apply the paint consistently without runs and dedicate a weekend or two to honing your skills.
.
That looks really good Frogman. My rustoleum adventure began because I was tired of looking at the trashed out roof thanks to using plasti-coat white to make the car cooler, and then stripping it off. Results were so good, that I did the rest of the car except for the hood. The hood was rusto'd 7 years (?) before and I used meguires' #7 glaze out of curiosity. I find it amusingly ironic that 2 cans of rusto did better than a $15 bottle of meguires plus a lot of work. The meguire's on the hood and rusto on the front nose are 5 days old.
I'll keep in mind that duplicolor gives better results than rustoleum.

Go buy some 2000 grit sand paper and sand all of that down to the color coat and spray it with some 2k MAX glamour coat ( tac rag and degrease the surface) . You can find it on amazon . I promise you will have OEM gloss . Oh and wear a mask, that stuff kills.
do you mean to use the 2000 grit on the new paint or the old paint?
If I was serious about the appearance, then the front nose needs more bondo glazing putty. It had been bondo'd before I bought the car in 1990, and is now cracking, the metal underneath was rusting.
I want to see how the meg's glazing 7 , and the rusto looks after 2 weeks. We're supposed to get some rain down here.
What I learned about wax is that they all last about a month if the car is outside. After the 1st or 2nd snow, they are gone. One Grand will give a better shine but isn't worth the extra cost and work.
The car being a nice shiny red is now ticket bait. If I get a ticket, I'm going to cover the car with meg's glaze #7.
