Looking for help on my first rebuild
So I’ve found myself in a situation where I have bought a 1980 sa rx7 a year ago I’m running condition but shortly after had to start a rebuild. My school and family life has gotten the best of my time lately halfway through my first rebuild. I’m at the point where I’m so new to these engines but so busy with school that I don’t have the time to figure out the best way to rebuild these bad boys.
I live in the Ontario Durham area and I’m looking for somebody who would be willing to give me a hand with this tbh teaching me the best way to tackle these engines so that I’m able to have it able to run the before the winter and it gets colder.
If you’re interested please send me a message.
thanks,
tyler

Hi Tyler .. I live in Ontario as well (south of Hamilton). Unfortunately I think your options are pretty limited due to the age of your rotary engine and the availability of parts (12A rotor housings).
Here's a couple of suggestions:
- Purchase a winter beater and keep your SA RX7 in a garage for the next 5-6 months
- Purchase a ready built 12A engine so you can just drop it into your car, add your intake, exhaust, water pump etc. .. and you should be good to go.
Buying a winter beater may be the less expensive option for now .. and give you the time to enjoy the tear down and rebuild of your 12A. You can spend the winter months researching, cleaning, resurfacing, and sourcing new parts as needed. Mazdatrix has a pretty good "How To" rebuild DVD to give you an idea of what's all involved. Make sure you download the 1980 Service Manual from HERE.
Buying a ready built 12A engine will get you up and running fairly quickly .. however you will have to be prepared to pay a premium price.

There's a '79 RX7 for sale in the Bellville area with rear end damage. The interior looks to be in very good condition .. so I'm sure you could swap the engine and then part the car out to recover some of your cost.
There's also a couple of 12A engines available for sale in the Cambridge ON area .. however you take your chances with anything from eBay or Kijiji.
For a new "fresh built" engine .. check the Vendor Forums to get a list of vendors that support the community. Turn around time may be 2-3 weeks plus your time to install and get it running. If you're busy with family and school .. and don't like working in a cold garage .. then you may have to push this project off until the spring.

If you decide to tackle the rebuild yourself - take a look at Arron Cake on youtube:
He has a series of 50-some videos on a 14-year (and counting) Cosmo rebuild that are worth watching - in that list of videos are several on tearing down, cleaning and rebuilding the engine.
It's a 13B, not a 12A, but actually seeing the whole process has got to be a huge help...
