Rotary People tell us you jobs...
I hear those biochem guys are pretty weird.
J/K!
I guess that I haven't posted in this thread. I'm a Nuke Engineer (PhD). I work in safety analysis for new power plant designs. Basically use codes to break stuff in the plant and then see how the safety systems take over and make everything okay.
I see at least one other 1st gen at work here from time-to-time (the person only drives it when the weather is nice). Still trying to find out who the car belongs to. Must be a true 1st gen nut to baby it like that.

well, i dont have a PhD...i'm not much in the way of mathmatical things...i'm really good with turning wrenches though....so with all of that taken into account, i decided to become a police officer. i work in the town i live in and put in 12 hour days dealing with the worst of the worst. my other job is a full time dad to two wonderful kids
Not to mention your other 'kids'. What's the total now? About 14?
I think Dave targets people with nice 7s and says "If you give me your car, I won't arrest you"
j/k
Congrats on the new little one, Dave!

Kent, that sounds about right..i'm in need of thinning down my fleet. i'm currently maintaining 5 running RX-7's, one RX-8, a 95 Ranger, 88 F-150, 63 Ford Falcon, 93 Camry, two wrecked 7's, two RX-7 shells, and my wife's car.. every time i see a 7 on the road whe i'm working i want to stop the guy and tell him about rx7club..but my luck the guy would think i was harassing him...then i'd have to confinscate his car

It was about 10 years total for me (4 yr for BS, 3 for MS, 3 for PhD). It varies quite a bit. Typically the MS is 2-3 years after the BS. The PhD seems to vary quite a bit more. The main part of your PhD is the dissertation (come up with a new idea, perform lots of research on it, basically write a book describing it, then present the work to a panel of professors). The dissertation is usually 1 year minimum of full time (no classes) by itself. It can go *much* longer than that, though.
It is a lot of work. Many people bail on grad school and never finish. However, it is a great feeling once you are done. There are a lot of great jobs out there that only require a BS. The MS is probably optimum for salary vs. years of education, but that varies a lot (depending on the type of work). If you are a prof like Ray, the PhD is pretty much required.

Dave has a PhD in RX-7s, College of No Knocks.
Stu, me too, 10 years of lost income, but happy.

Well, I don't think I ever posted up what I actually do for a living. Seeing as how Ray, Stu and Kent are post whoring in here I might as well too.
I have a BS in Computer Science with a lot of EE and a Communications Minor from the University of Missouri - Rolla. I've been making my living since 1980 doing software. I primarily work for smaller startups and I've done just about any sort of software out there from proprietary machine languages on up to C++ and Java. I started out on IBM big iron using punch cards and paper tape and was one the first students to do a project on the IBM PC when it first came out. At the moment I work in C++ doing embedded router code and in a Java J2EE server developing network management applications for my companies routers. Oh, and I telecomute working from home. I've been in 2 failed startups and 3 that got bought. I can't believe I get paid money to do my job because its probably something I would have done anyway.
Stu go back to school. I was not a good student in H.S. either but after working as a shipping and receiving clerk on a loading dock for a year, I got motivated to go to engineering school. Best damn decision I ever made. I also quite smoking when I started because I couldn't afford to go to school and buy cigs.

I'm a class 3 solderer at a local company called Matric. I solder boards that go into defibulators and life saving devices like that.
and I'm only 19. It took a lot of work to get to that position tho....
