Rear axle question
Idk alot about rear ends but here's a question
I have an 84 rearend that an axles bent it's disc brakes
and I have an 83 rearend with drum brakes soooo
do drum brakes have axles that could be used in my 84
i need them so I can drive the car but theyll be temporary until I can get money for some moser axles
I'd rather keep the disc because the disc brakes are new...

Axles are independent of the brakes except to change out
the drum backing plate and put on the disk brake mount you will
need to replace the rear axle bearings and collars. I think.
You will need to verify this for sure.
In 84/85 the GSL-SE came with bigger diameter axles and brake
spindles. If your 84 rear end is from a GSL-SE then the 83
axles will not work. If the 84 rear end is from a GSL then the
axles should work fine.

its an 84 gsl
and i have no idea Michael
we got to looking because we thought a noise was from the brakes being a little new or something and wearing down a little but it still did it with them off and spinning the tire well right when you spin it the tire would stop when your hand was removed
so we took off the rotor and it looks as if the **** is bent because when you spin it the motion isn't spinning in a straight line
**** its wobbling pretty bad
I don't know if the axles were bent before when the car had been wrecked and repaired and that was just an addition to why the people auctioned it off and my moms client bought it so cheap
I know the engine had a problem with the water pump so I'm thinking a bad water pump and a rear axle problem could be why i got the car so cheap

just checked a couple of threads and heres what i keep hearing
First you can't just slide out your LSD axle shaft and slide in a drum axle shaft. The plate that bolts to axle housing to keep the shaft from coming out is 3 hole plate on disk brake and 4 hole plate on drum units. Also the drum axle shaft have a large backing plate to mount the shoe, springs and wheel cylinder.
so if its a 3 hole plate on the disc brake and 4 hole on the drum that wouldn't work for just swapping axles right?

that axle is really bent!
84-85 cars ALL have the big bearing, 12A and gsl-se are different. to change from drum to disc you need to change the bearing and backing plate
79-83 axles are all the same.

Yea and to think I drove the car 500 miles like that without realizing it was that bad
What would be the best solution
I can get an 8.8 really cheap would it be better to weld the suspension mounting brackets to it and get the bolt pattern redone as well as adapting the driveshaft
which would be about $350-$400 and welding done at school
or
moser axles with the upgraded retaining plates new bearings and collars
$425-$450
and I want to keep the great handling of the car but have a strong rearend
