the 2002 illustrates the BMW conundrum very well. it is a joy to drive, all the controls just feel so good, but its also the worst car ever made by man. the bottom end of the M10 engine is pretty robust, but the rest of the car (including the car!) is junk. if it doesn't rust, its broken. so we have a double standard with BMW's, we consider them reliable, when a 40 year old british car is actually better

If ur comparing the 2002 to the FB, u have to remember the 2002 is almost 10 years older then the 1st gen. 3/4 of the 1st gens I see on CL I would not consider buying, most have visible surface rust, imagine what u can't see. I still think they are reliable and the great thing is, BMW still makes most of the parts u'll need (yes u'll pay for it but it's available). And another bonus is the community is just as good and knowledgeable as the 1st gen community. But I did sell mine to keep my 1st gen so that shows u how much I like the little rotary.

I agree. I am still learning the terms SA FB FD. I really like the gen 3 but couldn't swing it right now. But not to worry, I love the gen 1s as well and that is where I'll start. I wish I had kept my black 84.

i have owned every model year of Rx7 (up to 1993), and my favorite was the early 79. the 93 was fun for a while, but it gets old, its kind of a one trick pony.
