Oil Pressure in my 1984 GSL-SE ...

I have searched and trying to figure out if the oil pressure in my 84 SE is normal while in Drive on the Highway ....I recently installed a New oil sender unit because the original one was bad and not registering .....I use Castrol 20w 50 and its about 64 degrees here in New York when i went for a drive ...Looking at the photo i attached does that seem like the correct Pressure at those RPM"s ??? Is that 45 PSI if im reading the Gauge correctly ???? And what should it read at Idle in this warm weather ??? Any info is much appreciated ..Thanks ..Car runs great by the way ..no issues ..just curious what the numbers should be for a 13B Rotary Engine with 95,000 miles on it ....

Just figured it out ... LOL.....Rule of thumb is 10 PSI for every 1,000 RPM's so its functioning correctly .....

the spec in the shop manual is 64-79psi @3000rpm, and 13-38psi at idle.

step 1 would be to unplug the sender and clean the connector, and plug it back in. it is very rare the engines have problems.

Are you talking about SLIDING off the connector that is on the Oil Pressure Sending Unit ??? Or another connection ???? Please Clarify ..Thanks

Screw a mechanical gauge into sender port to see what actual #s are. Compared to my original car with 141k on it,those #s are low considering 20w50 in engine. Warm idle=55-59 psi and steady cruise with 3k rpm=85 psi indicated. Only time these #s are lower is if extremely cold out and thermostat in oil cooler is still closed.

Your oil pressure gauge is really more of a guideline than a calibrated instrument. I've had sending units read different pressures on the same engine, for example. It's pretty typical for oil pressure to show in that range after the engine is warmed up, regardless of outside air temp. I wouldn't be concerned about it,

My oil pressure gauge always read low but I just attributed it to the sketchy reputation for accuracy of rx-7 gauges (all generations). Then recently the voltage gauge would barely read 12v when a multimeter displayed 14.15v with the engine running. Last week I swapped the oil/volt gauge for one I had in a spare cluster. As a result the voltage is far more accurate and the oil pressure reading also increased. Not saying that's your issue, but it worked for me. 84 GSL-SE 70k miles on small streetport rebuild, 10w-30 Chevron oil, 65 deg day at idle and full operating temp.

Just to throw this out at the Group but the new Oil Sender sensor unit i Installed is a Standard aftermarket from Autozone and NOT OEM ....I am thinking if i had the OEM one installed the pressure readings would be higher ? Is that statement correct ? or it doesnt matter? ...Thanks

this will be true if the resistance value of the autozone sensor is higher or lower than OEM. i think it's listed in the service manual as to what that measurement is. i prefer a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Then that means the Autozone Sensor has a LOWER resistance value than OEM sensor because the values should be higher according to service manual should be 64 to 79 psi at 3,000 RPM and 13 to 38 psi at Idle ....
