Its official, I just got my notice for registration this year for the SA and it says no
inspection required. No safety and no emissions ever again for this car. Woot!

Now I think I will see if I can get an actual 1980s plate and put it on the car. Not sure
whats involved to do that, have to do some research on NCDOT to see what my
options are.

Alaska just invoked "z" registration here for vehicles +10yrs or older: $100/2yr register fees waived as long as you own that vehicle. And never had inspections here… wild west lives!

That's awesome, In pa we can get a classic tag, which doesn't require emissions, but you still have to get safety inspection, it costs more when you first get it, like 250. But you don't have to renew your registration every year.

In Ohio, once a car is 25 years old, no emissions testing is required. And after 25 years one can obtain historical plates....which while good for the life of the vehicle also limit the owner to driving the vehicle to car show, parades, and club events only. Pretty crappy trade off if you ask me.

Here in NC you can get antique tags or not. I don't think there are any restrictions on the antique
tags. After 35 years of age, no inspections, just registration every year. Any thing older than 1996,
safety inspection only ($13).
You can put any tag you want on the car as long as you have the official one in the car at all times.
So I can go look for a 1980 tag from some state that appeals to me and slap it on the car. Found
1 from Nevada that said NPSTNS or something like that. It will take me awhile to find the right plate.

Tim you're not going to impress the locals unless you have the real thing.
You need a genuine 1980 N.C. license plate, the green ones embossed with the state and correct year.

patina to show its real. Doesn't have to be an NC plate but it does have to be a state
that would go with the cars history. That would be one of Missuori, Kansas, Texas,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania or North Carolina. I'm partial to MO, TX, and NC at this
point.

When I register mine as classics they have to be inspected the first time then no more inspections. But they are only good for parades and car shows, not daily drivers. That's my mold though. Follow the rules.
