Eh... these stories are getting old. Mazda, won't ever do the rotary again. Mazda spins up these stories to keep people buying Miatas and 3's.
Rotary engine's flaw is running hot??? where did that come from?
EDIT: my prediction is the car in the shadow is a new version of a mazda 6

There were rumors of a 6 coupe, but the proportions on that photo don't seem right for a front driver. Plus Mazda has referred to the concept as being a "sports car".. something a 4 cylinder front drive 6 coupe would not be.

Agreed - shades of F-type Jag even! Looks RWD to me, which mazda has always dedicated to it sports car platforms. Fingers crossed that (1) they'll make it and (2) it won't be some crazy-tech wunder-car priced way up there like the FD. (and not undercut Miata? hmm. tough trick)

Yep, you can tell DD has one of those Japan cars, see how the rear hatch area is stretched a bit to accommodate the kiddie seats?
Let's hope Mazda doesn't make the same mistake again, like they did with the RX-8, when this new 7 or Cosmo or whatever hits the streets.

Why can't they do a retro styling based on the SA like Ford did with the Mustang? I mean,
have it look like a newer SA but have rear opening hood, hard top, large all glass rear hatch,
2 seats, great interior, keep it simple and light. They would be smart to reuse the Miata as a
base for it but put a rotary in it. Just think, all the great parts support that a Miata has and it
has a rotary. And price it about 10K more than a Miata. Problem solved.

I think that is what they are doing Tim.
According to Mazda:
"The design of the sports car concept to be unveiled in Tokyo is modern but maintains a sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda's entire history of sports car development into a single model."
MAZDA:Mazda to Unveil New Sports Car Concept at Tokyo Motor Show | News Releases
Doesn't sound or look like a hybrid to me, more like the classic two seat coupe we've been waiting for. Let's just hope it has a wankel under the hood.

I also know that my 03 Z is getting long in the tooth, and I'll be looking for a replacement daily pretty soon. It's got nearly 170,000 miles on it, and it's now older than the -7 was when I first bought it.

We know they ARE going to unveil a SPORTS CAR CONCEPT. The key word here is "concept". Even if it is wankel powered, it's still 50/50 that it will ever reach production. The Tokyo Motor Show is notorious for having some great concept cars that never see the light of day.
But I'm still hoping beyond hope that it is true and it is a new version of the 7 and it is wankel powered. And it is less then $50k. I'll gladly spend my kids college fund on one.

If it IS wankel powered I hope its not unreasonably expensive. I want a lot of kids to buy them and crash them so theres plenty of those new engines in the junkyard for me to scoop up and put into FB's.
They will never quite recapture the FB. (or SA for that matter) so im not crossing my fingers or hoping for anything. Ill take a new engine platform to play with though.

Yeah, the only way they recapture that market/spirit would be to put the new rotary in a de-optioned Miata and sell it for the same $25K Miata base price. Mazda has shown their unwillingness to try to re-capture/re-create that market since the Miata debuted in 1989.
What is the deal Mazda? You used to offer piston engine and rotary engine in the same chassis all the time. Was it only because you were trying to transition to all rotary engine fleet back then?
