Well , I finally got going on my model of the SA I am going to try and dupilicate to my 79 appearance . I guess this thread is a good place for model work to accumulate as mazdaverx has given the OK to ***** his thread .
Here are few of the first setup pics . I have a few more newer ones of the painting started but camera not downloaded yet . Will post as I go
I bought some duplicolor rattle cans to try priming all the parts and to keep the smell out of the house , check out my "Spray Booth" made in the garage from a shop vac box I kept . Works real good . The view outside the garage door is looking at minus 40 degrees celcius temperatures (at minus 40 celcius it is same as -40 farenheit) Yep frikken frigid here in manitoba this time of year. To keep the temperature up in the spray booth i have a 1500 watt halogen lamp going. I was able to close the flaps on the box around it with the lamp inside after spraying. The primer sprayed on good. I tried some model paint on the unprimed surface and while it works , it seems to work better on a primed surface . I hung all the pieces in their molds from bent paper clips through the top of the box.

Looks good . I Like the engine bay detail . I did my rad last night and it turned out great .
How did you do the lettering on the air snorkel ?
and if you have any ideas how I am going put my VIN on the dash board I am all ears . I am thinking big magnifying glass and a one bristle brush.

I didn't do the VIN, though... wish I'd thought of that.
Ther used to be a kit you could buy, that let you print water-type decals with an inkjet printer, but it only worked well with dark print on light backgrounds since most inkjet printers are dye, not pigment, inks.

Come on Dave, get it done. Yours is way better than all these prefab made-in-China models, much prettier and more detailed.
In the mean time here's my recent ebay purchase, about $12 with the shipping from China:
And this is clever, a paint booth!:
This one is fantastic. Details on the kit? Is it prefab?

So here is some progress on the black and aluminum paint to the RAD and long block. Still have to paint those plugs white ( ha ha)
Also hanging in the "drying room" ( under the stairs where my hockey equipment is kept) is my two tone limited edition seats . I will using the primer grey as the center of the seats and on the door panels which is a good match to the limited two-tone vinyl and cloth interior. The black smudged a bit and I need to touch up the grey area a bit .
Third pic is the attempt on the pulleys on unprimered pieces . It works , but not as easy to do as the paint runs and does not stick as well for the fine detail work in my opinion. Its going into the paint booth for a few coats of primer grey

I am surprised no one has commented on the paper weight sitting next to the paint booth that "accidentally" got included in the pic.

Thank you, sir.
It's the same white-box Monogram kit (moulded in red) mentioned earlier; I bought the unassembled kit off e-bay a number of years back. Built it one winter when it was too darned cold to mess around in the garage.
I put it in a "Model Maker" display case when I was done. The spot lights and gas pump light up, too.

I painted them on the inside. If I had it to do over again, I would have used a light grey or smoke color instead of white for the backup lights - - they look too bright to me.
I think painting the black trim on the inside of the rear window was the most nerve-wracking part, for me. Paint on clear is so unforgiving; you can't just scrape or sand and do over!

Here's some more inspiration for you Dave, the last of my current RX-7 models (although I am always scanning ebay for more):
Of course I didn't paint any of mine, they were done by Chinese workers making $0.50/hour who are much more skilled with a camel hair than I am. But not as good as you guys.
Dave work a deal with the wife to finish the model, after all it's way cheaper than buying yet another REAL RX-7.

Heres a bit of an UPdate on the 79 Limited Model . Made some progress over the past two weekends .
The black and aluminum enamel paint with a brush worked really well on top of the duplicolor spray grey primer done n=in the "paint booth". I tried painting on the bare plasic but not as good . I bought extra brushes and let a couple of them dry out flat with the paint on it and this made it easy to get into the tight grovess of the engin parts etc.

The under carriage was painted enamel black and several of the parts with the aluminum paint .
I bought some black felt and cutout pieces to fit in the back hatch to the seat backs and two smaller pieces on the floor in front of the seats . The engine was painted with the plates black and housings aluminum. The "Limited" seats were done by using the grey primer as the seat insert color . Its actually very close to the Limited's two tone fabric / vinyl interior . I did the same on the door panels by leaving an area of grey primer where it needed to be .
The dash came out pretty good with the silver strip also extended on the door panels . The stereo surround looks just the LE silver color. I tried to do the speedometer ticks in white but I could not get the detail needed . I think I need a bigger magnifying glass and some kind of hand steadier to do that on my next model ( my 89 vert next winter)) Kind of diappointed about this not getting done .

These shots show the felt "carpet" which turned out pretty good . and the seat backs and side door panels . . The body was painted with a duplicolor matching the beat black E6 paint and was sprayed in the paint booth. The clear coat with go on next weekend I hope .
the last shot illustrates how dangerous it can be working on cars . While trying to put the rims on the tires I shoved this "tire iron" right through the skin on the inside of my index finger and had to go the hospital sunday morning for stitches on both sides of my fnger . Just missed the tendons so no serious damage .
