The characters are from the Japanese alphabet, called Katakana, that is typically used for spelling out foreign words in Japanese, or for expressing emphasis (like we might use italics).
Matsu in Japanese means pine tree and Da means rice field. When they started given out last names in Japan they often used nearby natural features.
Ta - naka = Rice Field Middle
Toyo-ta = eastern rice field
Hon-da = main rice field
Ishi-da = Stony rice field

The Katakana letters posted on your side pillar means "Mazda" I had the same logo on my '86 Rx7 but on the fenders. You will find the same letters on the VIN plate in your engine bay
