how to change gas filter..
Without spilling gas. My filter is dirty again, and last time I had a gasoline baptism trying to swap it. I have been meaning to add a minor modification, a petcock valve right before the filter so that I can switch the gas flow on and off so doing a filter change doesn't involve me having to drain the tank or baptize myself with gas. But how do you guys do it?

I use either hose pinch pliers or my small hose pinch off tools and crimp the inlet and outlet rubber fuel lines. You will spill some gas, that's inevitable, but the gas will not continue to drain out as you replace the filter. I can post pictures of the tools that I use if that would help.

I generally just expect to spill a little fuel, and you will. The way I do it is get a small bottle and use it to catch the little bit that spills out from whichever end you can't plug quickly. After that I use the shank end of a drill bit to plug the hoses. Realistically hose pinchers are a better idea, but I've always had a problem acknowledging that pinching a hose doesn't damage it. I know it doesn't, but.... eh. The drill bit method is a carry over from working on yard equipment.

The tank is pretty simple to remove. Three bolts on the filler neck, two strap bolts, and the fuel and vent lines on top. The sender wiring can be accessed by removing the plastic shield in the left rear wheel well. If you have an 84-85, you will even have a nice drain plug on the gas tank. The tank is pretty light when empty and makes removing it a lot easier.

I use up ties I remove one side of the filter bend it zip tie it bent then do it with the other side until both sides are put in never had any issues or find a bolt that’s the same size of the fuel line and jam it in.
