running out of gas

this may sound stupid, but I ran out of gas today, due to the fuel gauge not working, and my trip meter was all mesed up. anyways, it started to sputer, and I drove it the gas station about a mile away, and it died pulling into the station. how bad is this for it, because I know about all crap that settles in the bottom of fuel tanks, but I have a new fuel filter with 100 miles on it, so should I cahnge it again to prevent it from getting clogged, or just leave it alone?

"know about all crap that settles in the bottom of fuel tanks"?
nothing changes as you run out of gas,, the pump is at
the bottom of the tank and pulls fuel from the bottom
full or not, if there is junk at the bottom it will end up in
the filter regardless if the tank is full or empty.
