hood scoop help!

Greetings rotary friends,

I am getting my hood repainted because I hit a deer a while back. My painter told me that if I am considering a scoop, now is the time to do it. Yes, I do think hood scoops are cool despite the many who are against having them. I would like your help in picking out one. I saw a carbon fiber one on Ebay, but it was a bit pricey. There are the cheap plastic ones for about 25 bucks. I don't care at this point to have a real functional scoop, but I would like one that looks sort of real/stock. At this point, it is just for show. I just think our hoods are way too plain.

BTW---My 7 is an 84 GSL-SE

Thanks!

Thanks for the pic. As of right now, the scoop that I life the best is actually the TII scoop. Of course I would put is center on the hood. That offset always looked ridiculous to me, lol!

I've seen the a subby hood scoop used before. Looks ok if you need/like that a scoop.

Check out Bad 83s scoop in his build thread.

ok thanks. What do you all think of the "shaker" style scoop used on old dodges? I think they were probably the nicest of all back in the day and still admired by many today.

Those were functional, part of the air cleaner intake - -that's whey they were called "Shakers." They shook when the engine moved!

To do a true shaker scoop on a -7 you'd have to offset it over the air cleaner.

I believe that's a newer mustang hood vent, I've been thinking of adding it to the widebody once I figure out the vmount.

I have to agree, this is very well done...do you have any pictures of the other side of the hood? I am interested in seeing how you got around the bracing.

I'm betting "through" rather than "around."

Yes I had to cut quite a bit of bracing out. You will will need some seam sealer or panel bond to glue the bracing back in place after you cut sections out.

The template I made from poster board material.

Pardon the mess, I have yet to go back and clean up all the sealer so I can trim the underside of the hood in.

How does this affect the rigidity of the hood since the bracing has been cut? Is it still safe to pull the hood up from the rear of the hood?

Since the remainder of the bracing is glued back down the hood is plenty rigid and opens fine. Once the vent is in it also helps take some flex out of it bc it fits tight.

If it was still an issue, you could take some aluminum/steel flat strap and bridge the cap in two places and rivet it down.

The TII scoop is aluminum so it would have to be TIG welded to the steel.

I wanted to do a WRX scoop like this one to mine:

I did a STI Subaru scoop on my race car ONLY out of necessity. I did a TII swap and kept the top mount intercooler.

It worked great and served a purpose.

Without a purpose I would think adding a hood scoop is stupid and ugly and ruins the lines of the classic Mazda.

Think of it this way..... Pontiac Firebird decal looks perfect on a 1976 Firebird Hood..... Would that bird look good on a Bentley??
