PA Front Strut Dust Cap Replacement

About a year ago I lost the dust caps which sit on top of the front struts in the strut mount.

I bought a pair of 3D printed caps which were supposed to be an exact replacement. When I inserted the cap into the hole in the strut mount the tabs which hold the cap in place broke off.

My fix was to buy 1.25" plastic hole plugs from Amazon (
Amazon Amazon
) which fit the hole in the mount perfectly. However they were not wide enough and lacked the dome shape.

So I took the broken 3D printed cap and sanded the bottom smooth, got my hands on some methyl methacrylate cement, and cemented the dome shaped cap onto the plastic hole plug.

It looks original and as long as the bond holds up to the heat in the engine compartment I'll be happy.

It may make sense to modify the old parts before the tabs fail and the cap gets lost. I don't know why the 3D printed part didn't work unless the KYB strut mounts in my car are not an exact replica of the OEM mounts.
