Its 2026 and the 44 year old original vinyl on my door cards is past tired. Its a bit strange, every other piece of the interior is in very good shape other than some fading of the black plastic trim in the rear hatch which is an easy fix with trim paint.
What are the options for door vinyl? other than some questionable looking replacement vinyl on ebay, I don't see much for our chassis.
I could recover in new vinyl but will lose the original faux stitching details. The Racingbeat upholstery kit for the seats means the a door vinly solution is the last part of a full interior restoration.
You are correct, not much in the way of any aftermarket support for these cars. Once in awhile, you can score nice replacements from someone parting out a car, but finding nicer ones than what you already have is getting pretty rare.
I had a friend in California who just recently had his SA door panels re-done by a local upholstery place. I think they did an amazing job of recreating the pattern of the original panels. The lower door pocket is off an OEM panel, but the rest of the panel and trim peice is new. Finding a good shop with the right artisan skills is crucial. It just isn't cheap.
The FB door panels all seem to suffer from this fate. My SA panels are still aging well (knock on wood). They seem to be made with better material than the FB ones. I blame the bean counters for this.
Good feedback. I think what I will do is try to find a used set of '82 door cards and have a local shop refinish them. The stitching lines of the Series 2 FB doors are very simple parallel lines and I assume easy for a shop to replicate. Not me - no sewing experience or equipment.
