To expand.. You'll need to find TDC on rotor 1 which is the set of spark plugs closest the the front of the car farthest from the rear. Finding TDC can be done multiple ways the quickest would be to align the marks on the main pulley with the indicator on the front cover. If you have no marks then you'll need to search on how to find TDC, this shouldn't be the case but was for me. I can share what I did but I'm not 100% positive that what I did is 100% right.

Once you have TDC you should be able to verify that everything downstream is in line by checking the arrow on the rotor (in the distributor) it should be pointing toward L1 on the cap.. Which I may be misremembering but I believe is the rearmost plug wire location, so the arrow with be pointing toward the driver's side position in a LHD vehicle.

If you need/want to restab the distributor then you'll want to look at the FSM but there should be an indicator on the shaft of the distributor and an indication on the gear that you line up. If you are going this route you definitely need to read how to find TDC and crack open the FSM.

Once you have all that basically use a timing gun to get L1 to TDC0 and T1 to 20 ATDC. These should be a yellow (TDC) and a red (20 ATDC) mark on the pulley.

Disclaimer: This is from memory and you should definitely validate what I have shared. The above post is really all the help you need for this but I wanted to expand a bit to hopefully not discourage you.

So you have marks but they aren't colored, or they are colored and you don't know which to use? For the latter yeti already said that in his post: yellow is TDC and corresponds with the leading ignition.

If you have marks but the color is gone: Standing on the driver side of a LHD vehicle and looking into the engine bay, red is the dimple further from you, yellow is the one closer to you. This assumes the pulley is rotated with both dimples facing up.

@trevor gueller https://www.mazdabg.com/ftp-uploads/...ION_TIMING.htm and https://www.mazdabg.com/ftp-uploads/...istributor.htm
^^This covers the other Mazda models too so be sure to pay attention to the titles of the sections.^^

A/V:
I didn't watch this in it's entirety so there maybe some inaccuracies or confusions. I did notice one inaccuracy and that was that the timing marks are 10 degrees different. I think he meant 20 degrees but I'm not sure all the various flavours of pulleys. If your pulley is stock it should have a 360mm circumference or a 114.59mm diameter which would mean each millimeter around the pulley is one degree.

There are a few methods of finding TDC; keyway, flywheel (or counterweight?), and through the spark plugs. I chose keyway and sparkplugs to locate my TDC.

If you are needing additional help please reply. If you find conflicting reports please correct me so we all grow.

Well i figured out the time i just loosened the bolt and screws for changing the timing and went with what sounded rebar while running and pretty sure i have 2 apex seals busted one on each rotor. I started at one of the marks and did a full rotation with one spark plug out and only got one puff of air from each rotor

I'm having trouble understanding what you are saying. Care to rephrase? It sounds like you are saying the engine is blown.

Well here痴 what i did. Because it was still misfiring i had the engine off and then i took off a spark plug on the front rotor and had it at TDC. I知 not sure what it is called but i rotated the belts attached to everything on the front of the engine thus rotating the rotors i went all the way around until i hit TDC again and only got one puff of air coming from the spark plug i removed. Then repeated this process on the back rotor and still only on puff. So this has me to believe i have some blown apex seal? Maybe?

The output shaft (or the main pulley in this case) rotates three times for every one rotation of the rotor. This means you only experienced one side of the three. I believe you are still in the game.

was it behaving normal before you changed the ignition components?

if so, are you sure you replaced the wires correctly?
