weird timing issues

alright guys, I've got my car running, but now I'm having some weird timing/ignition problems. I've got the car so it will run, rev up freely, and idle to some extent, but it's still running a little rough. Anyways, when i pull out the timing light on it, on the leading plug wire, the light flashes sometimes erratically. Also, the timing mark actually moves around a little when i have the light pointed at it, and the moving mark is accompanied by a slight change in idle rpm, and the car runs rougher for a second. any ideas on this? I have a new cap and rotor, plug wires, and spark plugs.

is the dizzy locked? If not, the timing changes with rpm due to the mechanical advance. If you rev to past 4000 rpm to set the timing, the mechanical advance will be in the full advance position, and will no longer fluctuate.

Also, some timing lights aren't rotary friendly for whatever reason. Which one are you using?
