Colors for 1985 and production numbers of each

Where can I find out what colors where offered for 1985 and possibly the production numbers of each color? We are looking at buying a 1985 GSL-SE that is a red-ish color. It's a different red, more like a rose color.

If it is dark red it could be 3A, Royal Maroon. The paint code is typically embossed on the firewall VIN plaque.

(The list below is incomplete.)

good thought but the only red available in 85 was RH, Sunride Red. Royal Maroon (3A) was a fairly rare color and i believe that it may have only been a canadian and non U.S. color choice. if the SE were an 84, it could be Persimmon Red Metallic (R7) which was a darker red metallic and was only available in 84.

Just how rare is the 3A color? I have the chance to buy a 1985 GSL-SE with 3A paint. I had never seen that color before on a first gen and wasn't sure it was the factory color. The person reassured me that it was the factory color. It's a one owner car.

whats odd about it is that 3A was not listed in the U.S. version of the 85 brochure and was not part of the regular color choices for the U.S. version. based on the vin, it appears that your 85 is a GSL-SE. what kind of emissions does it have? is it federal or California emissions? was your 7 originally from Canada?

It was purchased brand new here in Missouri and has lived it's whole life here as a one owner car. It has federal emissions (not California). The owner said that each dealer got 2 of them. One with leather and one with cloth. This one has the cloth.

lol, i guess so. i've owned more than 30 RX-7's in the 12 years that i've owned them, i've restored a few, and i have RX-7 literature up the tail pipe..and i thought i was pretty sharp on my rotary knowledge.. and now, the proof is in the picture that this color was available in 85 in the U.S...unless it was a special order car from Canada..which may have gotten the federal emissions package. i know that in 88, dealers in Canada had bought some 1988 10th Anniversary RX-7's from the states to be sold in Canada as the 10AE was never available in Canada and was a U.S. inport only.

Resurrecting a super old thread - but I just picked up a 85 GSL-SE with the 3A paint - original paint on 90% of the car - hood/fender repainted, but interior leather (red) with leather steering wheel, and the only example I've ever seen with factory color rear view mirrors (versus black). Guess I've got a "rare" one...

My 85 SE 3A also had factory color rear view mirrors. I've since repainted it to the non metallic Sunrise Red.

its also got bronze tinted glass.

the 4-85 and later GSL-SE's got the painted mirrors and shaded glass as like a final sendoff

Not from me Dave, I stole that one off the internet someplace, I think from another RX7club post.

I agree though, it's an interesting color and a great look.

The Metallic flake is really, really subtle. You have to get right up on it to see it.

Well, turns out I found a few more photos of a purple SE. And one for sale on ebay:

Aaaaand resurrecting it yet again.

I just picked one up from a guy in Lafayette, LA of all places.

From the craigslist posting I thought it was just a sun-faded Sunrise Red like my old GSL (which is what I was looking for) until I saw it in person.

1985 RX7 GSL-SE with color matched side mirrors and red cloth interior.

When I took mine to the Body shop to get an estimate to repaint, they explained it was a 3 coat job, base, metallic and clear coat. It was going to be pricey, so I changed to the simpler Sunrise Red. Royal maroon is a subtle color where as Sunrise Red is much more "in your face".

Here's my V9 1985 GSL-SE. I'm in the process of powder coating a bunch of stuff.
