Broken rubber piece on transmission
hello, i have attached a picture of the place a small rubber price mounted to my 83 m/t transmission. I stepped on it and it broke into pieces and i was wondering if anyone knew the purpose of this piece and if i need to buy another one. thanks!

Interesting! Usually the trans bellhousing will have a cutout from the factory that serves as a fluid drain point (maybe a vent too). I presume it is so that, if your engine rear main seal leaks, or trans front seal leaks, the oil will have a means to drain instead of collecting.
On my trans, this was more near the bottom, maybe yours has one too, just to the left of the picture?
The rubber in there looks like sealant that was applied at some point, probably to hide a leak!
So nothing to worry about, leave it open this way you can see a leak easier.
