Best way EVER to restore fender emblems
Best way EVER to restore fender emblems
New side emblems cost for the 79/82 $25.67 and for the 83/85 $39.20
No way Im paying that.
The problem is, 99% of the time the side emblems are not broken, but faded. The chrome part, fades kinda quick.
So, I came up with this:
Vynil decals for the side emblems. Chrome decals to put over the existing emblems.
The top one, is the one I had on my car, the one below, was a crappy as the other, but now with the decal on top, looks like new.
I will clear coat the emblem later on

wow that looks fantastic! i never would've guessed it to be a decal. you could scan the hatch part, if you took it off? that is if yours has enough left to see. i believe they were kindof hidden to begin with, as i've never seen one stand out much
You can use a sponge or mouse pad. Put some silver paint on top (after stripping the old paint off the emblem, leaving black... that is if you care to) of the sponge/MP and just "stamp" the emblem on it, then clear paint over it, either spray can or brush. Comes out like new
Done it before and it looks great

it was originally a silver "Rx-7" over a black suqare and yes they did stand out on the hatch. At Zoom fest we looke,s all but 3 7s had VERY faded hatch decals. Most of them turn black like the metal around it. Mine turned black and the black metal actually faded to solver, so mine and 1 other 7 had inverted. The last 7 had the proper new looking decal and it was a garage queen.
Thats the best redo of the emblems I've seen yet. The other methods with paint don't look like chrome like this does.
Whats the process?
Can you describe or show the decal before placing it on the emblem?
Did you trim it off around the letters or just let it adhere to the background?
The letters are chrome, is the background clear or black?
Last but not least, how much for the decals?

a) scan the original emblem
b) trace the scanned emblem into a graphics program
c) use a vynil plotter machine to cut the decal
d) carefuly apply the chrome decal into the original emblem
There`s no background on the decal, what you see black, is the original plastic.
Im not selling these, I made them for myself. If there´s enough interest I could run a batch.
My decals thread its a sticky here on this forum
I agree, a real chrome finish would be cooler. I'm interested in a pair of the side decals if you decide to make them.
Also I'd be even more interested in a couple of decals that would freshen up the rear hatch emblem. That would have to be a big seller, I've only seen one of those that even comes close to looking original.
Thanks
Ray

I've been inspired too Stu but I don't think it can be done and look ok, that one is going to need a good decal. It's just too flat for paint and I don't think you can stencil it.
Incidentally, there seems to be two versions of th rear hatch emblem, one silver on black (most common, and that's what I think mine used to be) and the other, like Stu's, black on silver.
At ZoomFest somebody had me convinced they were both versions of the same thing, just in different stages of fading.
Does anybody know the truth on this? What did the original look like??
And yeah xlr, I'll take one of those air filter decals too!

Mine will be black background with metallic silver RX-7, to match my car body
Wow, incredible restoration. Looks really really good. So you scanned your emblems, and printed out an outline on chrome sticky paper? then cut it out and stuck it on to your old emblems?
