79 GS - Flywheel Ring Gear Replacement (?)
79 GS - Flywheel Ring Gear Replacement (?)
When starting my near mint '79 GS, it sometimes made a noise like starter was not fully engaging gear with the flywheel ring gear (so a New Starter got installed)
Same Noise is now (again) sometimes still there
Mechanic says "Flywheel Ring Gear Needs Replaced" with action plan as follows:
- Transmission needs to be removed
- Clutch and flywheel removed
- Ring gear has to be heated and beaten off the flywheel
- New ring gear heated and pressed onto the flywheel
Does the above sound correct ??
Looking for advice -
Thanks -
Ron

it would probably be best to pull the starter and inspect the ring gear before you pull it all apart, chances of it being a bad starter are higher than the ring gear being bad.
EDIT: there is a little cover on top of the engine and you could remove that and inspect the gear
these days rebuilding the existing starter is better than the parts store "rebuilds"

Thats a good plan for the mechanic, not for you. Try to look through the inspection hole as mentioned and rotate the motor slowly and look at the teeth. Also easier (and cheaper) to get a good used flywheel than to change the ring gear.
