(OTHER) Need info on removing Sa (79) Speedometer gear

Having problems opening FSM so I need to know how to remove the speedometer gear from the trans. On Fb's, you just remove the cable, undo the bolt and wiggle it back and forth and it comes right out.

Never worked on on an SA tranny. All the FSM does is point to the speedo gear and says to remove it. Does not say or show how. Sec. 7, p. 4, fig. 7-13. I would guess it is held in 1 of 3 ways. It's either pressed in, screws in or there is a retaining bolt/screw.

The cable is removed by undoing a collar and slipping the cable out. The gear can be removed by loosing a bolt that holds a sleeve that has the oil seal in it and an o-ring sealing it to the case. Should be able to pull the sleeve out and have the speedo gear drop out.

Tried that. The gear assembly will turn approx 90 deg each way but will not come out like the Fb's.

Doc, looking at the parts diagram in looks like this is true for sa22c-574180 and greater. Before that it looks like theres a dowel pin that holds the gear, shaft and sleeve in but its not clear from the pictures how that dowel pin is removed. Maybe you can drive it out from one side or the other, it looks like it anchors in the case around the sleeve.

Tg, thanks for the help. The trouble i was having was getting the assembly out of the trans. IN the attached pic's you will see why, the dowel pin was sticking out after the gear sheared off. The good news is that the FB speedo gear assembly will work in place of the Sa one. The only differences between them is the mounts that retain the assembly to the trans and steel gear versus the plastic Fb one. The teeth have the same count and diameter so the accuracy should be the same. I installed the Fb one in place of the Sa one and ran it up in the air, it works. May be info for archives?

Hey, this is good dog food fo rthe archive.

Doc, what was the VIN for this SA transmission? This assembly changed it looks like in the 8 month of 79 which probably affected means most 79s will have this earlier assembly. I have an 80, so I'll check mine to see whats up for an early model 80. My 80 was manufactured in 8/80 I think.
