After searching the net I've come up with not much on how to do this. Out of the few people that have (AJC-13b, RICE RACING and a couple others) I coulden't get out of them what exactly they did so here you guys go...

I used the stock FB crossmember, it works fine. Drill two holes in it like the pic shows (a little bigger than 8mm). I think I'm going to take it back apart to weld in the stock holes then machine flat so the lock washer seats all the way around.

 

Here is a pic of the spacer installed. It's 3.6x1.75x.75 and the two holes are drilled 2.75 apart. I made it out of aluminum figuring the crossmember has two rubber "dougnuts" so that should take out some of the vibrations. (didn't want that "hear every shift/driveshaft kind of car")

 

How did the shifter line up?

Perfect because I put the FB shifter housing on the T2 trans.

and did you have to do anything to get it to bolt up to your engine?

 

Awesome! I am planning to put a t2 tranny in in the future, not i know how to do it. Not sure what to do with the bellhousing though 'cause I have a 12A.

 

I know the bellhousing bolt patterns are all the same, The best way to stick it to your 12a would be to put on the proper rear counter weight, and an after market turbo clutch and flywheel. The differance in the bellhousings is the location of the starter. The turbo has a little larger flywheel, so the starter is located a little further outward.

 

riffraff- not sure yet on the driveshaft, haven't got to that yet. It bolts right up to the engine, all 12a/13bs share the same bolt pattern.

when ever i get around to getting a little more power, i am going to replace my clutch. and i figured at the same time i might as well go for a stronger tranny.

 

It'll take some grinding on the starter holes to use a TII trans on something other than an 86+ 13B.

 

Setzep if I were in your shoes at this time, I wouldnt take thre mount back out. I would get some3/4"-1" flat washers, and tack them in on the mount. That would be far less work and hold just as good... I will find out the middle of may how bad this is . I got to do the same thing

I'd like to eventually have a T2 trans in the '85, bolted up behind the 12A. (Well, *a* 12A )

 

From looking at my different trannies on the floor, I'm thinking you can clearence the starter holes on the TII bellhousing to move the starter in the correct placement for the 12A flywheel.

I assume you have to do something since there are no 240mm flywheels (or front counterweights) that are weighted for 12As that I know of.

Maybe find an old 4 port 13B bellhousing or something?

 

You could always just get an automatic counterweight and a T2 lightweight flywheel.

It would have be a equivalent weight for the counterweight to match the motor. Andlast I check automatic Rx-7's are kinda rare

 

Automatic sevens are fairly rare, but the counter weights are not.

actually i think we should make another section for mods people have done that need to be archived instead of having it all cluttered up at the top like its getting now. i'm about 2 seconds away from makin a quick page of my own for 1st gen mods and i guess i'll just ask permission to use other peoples info. it'd be nice to have a page that answered all the q's we get everyday from noobs and also answer important q's like how to put a tII tranny behind a 12a

Why do you guys all want T2 trannies in your 1st gens?

The T2 5th gear is a little taller, so you'll get better gas mileage on the freeway (wa-hoo), but your 5th gear acceleration is gonna suck. A few of the T2 gear ratios are closer, but it's not worth the time and $ to do the swap.

Do all you guys have turbo motors with 300ft/lbs of torque? Remember, it's torque that kills trannies, along with drag race type starts with real wide sticky tires. I know for a fact the stock 1st gen can take a n/a 285fwhp 13b peripheral port with 205/50/13 or 225/45/13 hoosier dot R's and I doubt you guys are putting out that much power or have that sticky a tire. n/a rotaries don't have much torque. turbos make lotsa torque down low......

If you're gonna replace your tranny, why not get one with much better trans ratios like the 79-82 RWD 626 tranny. I got one in my car and the close ratios make acceleration much faster.....

We want to put a t2 trans into our 7's because I doubt a NA 13b or a 12A tranny is gonna like his or mine 350rwhp Got better things to do than go from a standing stop and say WOW that pop sounds really cool, lets pull the tranny out

See sig WE wont be running your run of the mill 12A or 13b NA We are running single turbo setups with a Cosmo 13b-RE setup. 350-400 hp is about right for his and my set up

 

They are rated for more torque.
The 5th gear ratio is actually shorter than my gsl-se trans that I would have used (T2-.762 vs. -SE .758).
Yes it should have more than 300lb/tq.
Sure a stock tranny can take 285hp from a PP but I'm sure the torque is a lot lower than 285, like you said, torque is the killer of transmissions.
I got my T2 trans with my 13B-RE cosmo engine, package deal.

But you are right, if you don't have a turbo/supercharger that can produce higher torque then, the n/a trans should be just fine not to mention it weighs less.
