RacingBeat crossmember 12a to 13b6p
I saw a neat little gadget on Racing Beat's website. It's a crossmember that allows you to put a 4port 13b in a 1st gen 12a. My question is: Does it also work for the 6port? are they the same in the sense of bolting to the engine mounts? Would really like to know. I have a new 88 motor dying to go into something. Thanks
You have to use a 1st-gen front cover. The motor mounts bolt to the front cover on 1st-gens, and they bolt to the center housing on 2nd-gens.
Yes, it'll work.
(Argh... I just realized... this means I can't throw my spare 12A in my FC so that it will at least run and drive...
not without a lot of fabrication anyway, and it ain't worth it for a 100hp 3000lb car)
edit: Just remembered... it's worth it to try and track down a GSL-SE front cover and oil metering pump because all carbed cars had only 2 oil lines and injected cars had 4 lines, so it'll be easier to get working right with the GSL-SE parts. Or you can just remove it and its shaft, block it off, and run 2-cycle premix.

A 13B is 20mm longer than a 12A. Mazda made up the difference with a different crossmember for the -SE. The swap part isn't the body crossmember, it's the engine mount-to-front cover bracket. RB sells a bracket with a 20mm offset so a 13B will fit on a 12A crossmember.
Or you could just oval out the holes in the crossmember and the mount bracket and use the stock 12A part, but the holes in the mount bracket are slotted (they have to be because of the way it all goes together) so you'll have to do a LOT of cutting and should probably run some Big Beefy Washers on there so the nuts don't pull out.

Ok, well that is the engine mount bracket not the crossmember...
And you don't need to buy one of those either.. Just drill the holes back 20mm
This is how my 79 is and I have never had any problems...

oh ya,I have the 88 frontcover and oi pan too, will they work? My 1st gen has power steering. You think it'll line up or will I have to go with a manual rack and pinion? Thanks guys

dude, if you need some engine mount brackets (the thing that looks like a REALLY short "U", about 16" wide, 4 holes in it.. 4 bolts on to the engine, 4 onto the frame member, correct? I've got like five of these brackets, so if you want to buy a spare one to work on so you don't mess up your good one, I can sell you one, don't know what price though, just need some $$ to pay back race car bills.
