Clutch Trans questions

Ive got an FCS3 that should be making about 450hp with boost, How much is the stock manual trans good for? I plan on drifting/tracking/daily driving the car and am trying to find the right clutch. Ive been eyeing up the multitude of twin plate clutches out there and it seems they are known trans killers? anyone have experience with this combo? Need advice on the right clutch for the stated driving style. would really like to go twin plate but not sure its the right choice. Thoughts?

welcome to the board.

assuming this is a genuine T2 driveline behind the engine, it can hold quite a bit of torque if used within reason. i've seen many turbo 20B projects with the T2 tranny behind it. you should be fine with your "measly" 450.

personally, i have been a staunch supporter of ACT clutches over the last decade and a half. so far, i have never been less than pleased with them. that said, i've never made even close to 450 hp, so i can't say how they perform at that level from actual experience. however, quite a few members have used them at that level and beyond.

Exedy seems to be another popular choice. i've never used one, but i think i would based on what i've seen.

i had a bad experience with ClutchMasters (actually, my brother did - but i had suggested it to him).

i simply don't trust SPEC behind a rotary (regardless of how they seem to do with high power Porsches).

your best bet is to poke around the Drifting forum and see what the Rx-7 guys suggest and use for themselves. wish i could be more help.

Hands down ACT or Exedy. Either chose is good in my opinion. For my application I went with the exedy stage 2, fd3s with stock Trans.

I have to agree with Diabolical1 here. ACT's offerings are reasonably priced and deliver on their promises with no fuss.

Aaron Cake is running a TII Transmission and GXL's N/A LSD Differential at 500hp with excellent results. I have the same drivetrain behind my 20B-REW, putting out a rather mild 300ish hp through an ACT HDSS clutch rated for 330 ft.lbs.

Right now you're probably thinking "WTF?", so let me explain a bit:
During my build, there were two routes I could take: Keep the N/A transmission and use an ACT Xtreme clutch kit, or swap to a TII Transmission and get an Heavy Duty clutch. The N/A clutch would have cost more and been considerably heavier at the pedal than the TII one. Plus, I found an Infini IV transmission for $60

And then I found the clutch on ebay for $100

I'm using the stock twin turbos because the idea of having instant power & response regardless of engine rpm is very difficult to say no to. A bone-stock 20B-REW hits the full 10psi of boost at 1800rpm, achieving 280ft.lbs of torque there as well. It puts out 300@3000rpm. These are stock numbers using the stock NF01 ECU (circa 1990) and probably rather conservative, but that kind of torque and response speaks for itself. With proper tuning on a standalone like my Haltech, I think we could do better. the only limit is my clutch

Thank you all for your help, I think i will end up with an excedy twin plate of sorts, the build just took a rather abrupt turn, Found out that Kyle Mohan is selling is formula D built motor from the 12/13 season which made 600 hp, much more than the 450 I was planing on with the current motor being built. I am in contact with him now in regard to purchasing his motor and will keep you all informed! :P
