Where should I live near Pasadena?
Not strictly an rx7 question, but I thought I'd ask for advice -
I just got a job offer in the Pasadena area and it's a pretty sweet offer but I'm from MA and it would be quite a change for me. If I decide to take the job, does anybody have a recommendation as far as a nice, clean, safe place to live that wouldn't be too far of a commute (~<30 min) and wouldn't be too costly? I know that's a tall order, but I'd be glad to hear any suggestions. I would most likely be looking for a house to rent with a few friends or something, and I'll need a garage for the FD.
Also, my FD is somewhat modified, and although it should pass smog in MA, it won't pass visual in CA. I don't want to deal with illegal inspections and such, so would you recommend selling my car as it is and buying another when I get to CA or returning mine to stock? I kind of feel like it would be a shame to return mine to stock since it took a lot of work to get it where it is.
Thanks for your input.

How do you mean Pasadena is rough? When I went out for the interview I thought it was pretty nice.
For mods: v-mount, pfc, dp, hf, rb dual tip, intake, few other less major things.

he meant rough as in strick cops. theres always this one motorcycle cop trying to be sneaky, hiding on peoples driveway, with his radar gun out. he already handed out a ticket to my friend, but not me yet.

Good luck finding a house anywhere near Pasadena for a decent price, rent or buy. I used to live a few blocks from Caltech when I used to go there, but I lived in a 150 sq. ft shithole and still had to pay $600/mo. NOt bad for the area. Good luck finding a garage too. Not trying to get you down, but you better start looking in earnest.... NOW
I have to say that I did really like living there. As long as you stay south of the 210 FWY, it's really a very nice place to live, work, and just hang out. Good luck, and take care of your 3rd gen

These guys exaggerate about the cops I think, I drive my silver FD around all the time without issue, and its not quiet. Do I speed around and pop the bov constantly? No.. you are just asking for it, save it for the freeway (when there isn't traffic, basically Sunday @ 7AM) or go over to Angeles Crest, or better yet the track. Unfortunately a lot depends on how the car looks at a quick pass too, mine looks stock with no wing so..they probably think its a Miata. The bottom line is that cops profile, if you look the part then they will pull you over, and I don't mean that in the racial sense at all.
And there are lots of nice places to live north of the 210 freeway, but it is true the sketchiest spots are to the north you just have to get east of Hill/Allen.

I dont blame the cop. In fact, give me his name so I can personaly thank him for keeping the street safe.
i drive through pasadena, south pasadena, and san marino a few times a week to get to work. For those who have heard my FC, its loud even at idle and I havnt been stopped. But of course dont drive like an idiot and shortshift it. You dont need to be at WOT on the streets.

hmmm. are you saying that Rotary13B1 is an idiot for getting a ticket?
I work in Pasadena and live in the San Fernando valley. Someone said it eariler, definetly heed his advice, stay SOUTH of the 210. Anywhere from Eagle Rock up north through the San Fernando Valley is good.
I have lots of friends who live in the San Gabe Valley and drive into work. They are commuting on average about 20 Minutes for every 5 miles they live away away. If you live 20 miles away you will commute for over an hour easy.
Oh, and cops name is officer dollar.
That bastard parks his motorcycle in our drive way and radars people flying down foothill.
Best of luck.....

Thanks jesuscookies, I'll keep that in mind when I start the house hunt. It looks like me and a few other people from my school will be in the same boat, so that should help.

Wow, what a coincidence. I . dont work for JPL.
Los Angeles (Incl. Pasadena) is basically one Giant Neigborhood, and depening on which tracks you cross you can be in a great area or a **** pit within 2 Blocks... or sometimes the same block. There are notorious neighborhoods to be cautious of like the south central area (Inglewood etc)..... but basically find a place, then ask someone that lives near there how he/she percieves that neighborhood.
And remember there are shuttle busses to JPL as well... that might influence where you want to live...

Is this the same guy that parks his bike in front of the Avon building, or on the other of the overpass near that fountain place? I see that bastard there all the time in the morning, especially Sunday morning for some reason.

that link pretty much describe each districts in LA.

i've lived in 4 different areas in pasadena, and i've found a few good locations for reasonable price and still safe for my/your FD.
1. within pasadena, my favorit location would be on pasadena street (its one way so easier to get in and out) just across from the Huntington hospital to the left side of where the building sits. Its close to oldtown yet some of these private owned apartments are pretty cheap compare to the rest of pasadena with corporate owned apartments.
2. next runner up spot is around the neighborhood just south of Huntington Blvd. around Fairoaks. on huntington or north of it is considered S. Pasadena, but if its just south of huntington, its considered North Alhambra. That area is safe and looks a bit simiar to san marino or pasadena, but way cheaper on rent due to the city limit.
those 2 areas would be my suggestion from personal experience w/ my fd and moving around. the more east and north of Colorado you go, the shittier it gets... you definitly don't wanna live somewhere around Pasadena city college, the area is not bad, but the apartments there are really shaddy and some don't have street lights..
good luck on ur find
