What do you highly modded / 20B peeps do about smog?

What do you highly modded / 20B peeps do about smog?
I'm seriously contemplating an NA 20B setup.
One of the things I'm wondering about is what do you guys do with regards to smog and such legal things. I see plenty of single turbo setups and a few 3 rotor cars here in CA.
Maybe the issue is particular to me since I'm new to CA and don't really understand the laws very well. I'm still trying to figure out how much trouble I can get into with such an illegal swap here and what would happen if I get busted.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Same here!
You pay about $200 to illegally smog the car. But you risk trouble if its a sting (never heard of it happening, but you never know!). Best bet is to register the car out of state so you don't have to do emissions testing. Even if you pay off the smog shop, you still could get caught say, without catalytic converters, which if the cop wanted to, he could fine you $2000... for EACH cat thats missing. On FCs, thats $6000. And they could probably impound your car for running highly modified and all that, but thats doubtful.
My point is, the state peace officers have a lot of leeway with what they could do to you and your car. I rarely hear of people getting caught, and if they do, its usually small fines, but it could happen.
Depending on where you're moving to, the local peace officers could give you a lot more harassment than in other areas. Some areas which have historically had HUGE streetracing problems, police have cracked down on like crazy. Unfortunately, they have gone a little too far sometimes. For example, you taking off from a stoplight aggressively, just screwing around and having fun, could be classified as streetracing. They could crush your car for that. Seriously. And it would hold up in court too. Be careful running modded cars in CA. Even though everyone is doing it, you need to be careful. E.G. Chino, CA (Inland Empire) used to be a big streetracing city, but police have cracked down and I haven't heard of anything going on in at least 3 years.
I'm sure theres people that disagree with me, and thats fine, please voice your opinions on the subject.

No it's not Turbo'd
I say all this sneaking around is crazy, the Gov't knows that people try and get aound the smog, people get bribed. Why not get a "Polluters" License, that allows you to have the vehicle, but checks your milage every 2 years during smog, you can't go more than 5000 mi / Year or 10kmi per smog, and you have to pay the $300-$600 to the Govt. to do it... they'd make cash, and you'd be under the "Collectors, infrequently used" Status... which you have all the Shelby Cobras etc.. under anyhow... and you "Pay" your share for the impact on the environment...
But I digress... Finding a "Crooked" shop is the answer you search....

Cops can't just put you in the back of their car and search your vehicle with no probable cause, unless you guys were messing around or doing something you shouldn't have been doing.
You don't have to register in another state to avoid smog, you can just register in another county. Few counties in CA do not require a smog check every 2 years, just upon transfer of title. I believe there are a few members on this board that register in other counties in CA and do not worry about smog.

Hmmm... How would that work? Would I need to setup a residence in that county? Would I need to register and insure all of my cars in that county?

Went track only
After living with a single for many years, and doing the 'hook up' thing, it got old. Eventually after 8 years I got cornered, and the officer was very compelling in convincing me it was time to make the car track only (fix it, or I'll throw you in jail and take your car). Really the best thing that ever happened, because now I only drive on the track, which is the only way to enjoy the car any more. It was just too fast for the street, and on the track you can really flog it for 20+ minutes.
If it's your main mode of transportation, I no longer recommend mods - better to keep one car smog legal and modify another one for the track...and since track cars usually start off with beater bodies or blown motor cars, they are cheap, and it costs about the same to just buy another car and build it up vs. modding your daily driver, dealing with smog and worry all the time about getting caught.
Words of wisdom after 11 years of experience.

This isn't my main mode of transport and will never be a daily driver. Its meant to be a fun weekend car that sees a good amount of track time.
That being said, I'm reluctant to make it a track only car. I'd prefer to just buy a race car at that point since wheel to wheel racing is my ultimate goal in the next 1-2 years.
The thought of getting busted and being stuck with a car that is far from street legal is worrisome. i have a life and a real job and don't have time to deal with that kind of hassles. The car gets enough attention and the cop made some comments about mods last time I got pulled over but didn't press the issue so the risk is there.
I guess the 3 rotor will remain a lustful dream for now.
