Thinkin' of swappin' in a JDM engine, will it pass smog?
Alright, my S4 FC is sittin' wait to either get another engine or a rebuild sittin' around the Monterey Bay. I've a budget to fix my FC, so I did some searchin' and saw some prices for JDM engines. My only concern now is IF I get a JDM engine, would it pass smog in California?
My car's registered in WA, where I'm currently stationed, but I'd like to register my car with CA.
So, what should I do? Rebuild my engine, get a JDM engine or get another USDM engine?
Thanks for your time.

well...from mine and others experience with JDM engines, it's a good bet that you will need to rebuild it befire installing. If you do decide to go with a jspec, grab a UIM/LIM and secondary fuel rail from a USDM TII. The jspec TII motors do not come with EGR valves on the LIM...
I'd rebuild your engine and make sure that all the smog equipment is on and functional...
it'll be cheaper to rebuild the one you have.

If your car is able to be registered in another state, I would advise you to do so. JDM engines do not usually have the EGR and other associated emissions equipment that US cars have.
So in short, you will not pass smog. At least, not w/o the help of a few dead presidents.
