Hey guys, I'm having trouble here. I'm trying to choose an exhaust system. I've already got the high flow cats, and I'm keeping those no matter what. I want to pass smog legally, and I want to pollute as little as possible. This means I can have headers and a catback. I want the car to be louder than it is now, and from what I hear, both the Racing Beat header and catback will keep the car very quiet. On the other end of the spectrum is Corksport, whose catback and header are extremely loud, and should not be used together. I like the look of the Racing Beat catback best, but not the sound volume. So would combining the Racing Beat catback with the Corksport header be a good idea? I think that would give a good balance between louder than stock and not extremely loud. But it seems most people on Youtube have done exactly the opposite and gotten the Corksport catback with the Racing Beat header. What are your guys' thoughts on this? Keep in mind I want it to be louder than it is now, but not get-pulled-over loud.

Neither of those headers are CA legal, and you couldn't even fake it because neither have an O2 port. You could drill and weld your own i guess...

Oh I didn't even think about the O2 sensor. I just looked it up though and the Racing Beat header actually does have a O2 sensor. The Corksport site doesn't say unfortunately.

Edit: Just looked it up, Corksport's headers also come with the O2 sensor.
https://www.rx7club.com/corksport-183/header-na-fc-688092/

I know they're not CARB certified, but theres no reason they won't pass smog - they just won't pass the visual. I was planning on just keeping the stock heat shield for the headers, which would shield the aftermarket ones from view... but as you stated last Friday Matt, the heat shield bolts up to the stock headers. I'll have to wrap the headers in tape and spray paint them brown as you suggested.

Oh awesome! Then you could probably get away with it, though it is still technically illegal =\ Heat wrap and crappy spray paint!

If you wanna try an RB catback before you buy one, let me know!

Damon, you should just go all out!

haha

Thanks for all your advice / tips Matt, you've been a real help with my **** decision of what headers to get. I'm nearly set on my setup, although its opposite of what everyone else is doing.

I always liked this one. Also, here's a cool flyer from an old ad campaign for turbo nuts.

^ Hey Casey, do you think I can run Novice(SM class)until the end of the year. I'm guessing Novice is similar to running "time only" just lumped into a category.

I think you need to go over the rules again if you are trying to get classed. I stil think you are in SM2.

SM is for 4 door cars that have lots of mods.

SM2 is the same thing but for 2 door cars.

CSM is a catch all clas for anyone that can not fit into one of the classe above due to something stupid. (still a full built CSM car would be VERY VERY fast, locally though its is not a strong class.... same with both of the SM classes.)

Read the SM2 rules and let me know why you think you do not fit in that one. same with you Robert. (I am 99% sure your porting takes you out)

class rules can be found on the SCCA we site. http://www.scca.com/contentpage.aspx?content=61

oh and can you run NOV untill the end of the year... .yes.

though I still think that you should just run X untill the end of the year, that way you can run whenever you want.

if you run NOV, you will have to run when your supposed to.

Here's what I found in a few places,"Four-seaters (BMW, Corolla,
Civic, Integra, Neon, Supra, Talon, VW, Starquest, etc.) run in SM and two-seat sports cars
(Corvette, CRX, M Roadster, Miata, RX-7, MR2, etc.) compete in SM2
"
Good tip about the X-runs

oh ok, so it goes off seats, not doors.

either way, you CAN run in one of the SM classes.

and again, in both SM or CSM, if a fully preparred car atteneds, you wont stand a chance either way, so its up to yu wich onyou run.

hey what are your mods again? what do you have that takes yo out of a SP class?

I wonder if you fit into STU, STS or something like that Damon... that would be sweet, you might actually stand a chance in one of those classes. again, post your mods, i will ask the experts.

The 2.6liter turbo is what keeps me out of the STU,STS,STX classes. STU,STS are NA classes and the only turbo class,STX, has a displacement cap of 2.0 liters. I've seen other pics of Starions running Solo and they all rock the SM. I'm going to keep researching though and hopefully by next season I'll be ready to compete. I like the idea of running against Honda's, Firebird's, and Camaro's and such. Hopefully no Supra's though. I can't run SP because I have a larger than stock Turbo and ported head.

gotcha... yeah that will do it. looks like SM it is.

if I read it right, CSM is even more of a catch all. meaning bigger and badder mods. (you will have to go to the Solo2 web site to find the rules on CSM since it is a local class only, not a reagonal class. this means the guys at fontana made this class.

I dont know, I am a lot unclear about this class, here is the only info I can find.

CALIFORNIA STREET MODIFIED (CSM)
Vehicles eligible for CSM must be capable of being licensed for street use in
California, shall be run on DOT approved tires and must meet all SCCA Solo2
Safety requirements.

this would lead me to belive that if you can get it registered legally, you can run it. that would mean jsut about ANY mod you do would throw you out of CSM as in the state of california and simple non CARB exhaust is NOT California Street Legal.... I dont know. if your intrested in this one, we would need to check with the experts.

Rob, they are going to open the practice list tonight.

meaning if you want to get into the next practice, go on the web sight (solo2.com) tonight and you will see where you can click on the practice. inside it will give you directions.

Mail the check, hope you get in. just make sure you have some tires. after 12-16 laps of autocross you will have chewed them up pretty good if they are already low.

Damon, biefly looking at your mod list on your signature, I dont see anythng that would not allow you to run SP like I do...... am I mising something? is anything ported in the engine? how bout the turbo its self, is it stock? (look slike its a G car, so GSP....... hmmm... I have never even seen a GSP car)

....... this turned into quite the little auto cross thread didnt it?

looks like the Conquest is a GS (G Stock) car, but when turned into a Street Prepared car it moved to ESP.... you would need to verify that (which is a simple asking of the experts)... but yeah, you MIGHT fit into ESP if your not over modded.

EDIT: I have verified the above

Are you post whoring Casey ESP would be cool, it stands for "Extra Special" right. Yeah, I read street prep and with my ported bigger size turbo along with ported head I'm pretty sure I don't qualify. As for CSM if it's even more of a catch all I'm guessing the competition will be even tougher. I'll stick with the Evo's/STi's in SM. Is that the group Jesse runs with or does he do CSM?
