Monterey's pretty remote compared to SoCal. It's even farther from LA than Las Vegas.

It'd be a fun drive up, but Wacky's probably right; it's committing multiple days out of town for anyone from SoCal instead of a same-day event, and it's a long stretch for some of the older or more extreme-build cars. Also considerable added "CHP mod-hassle exposure;" something out-of-staters don't have to worry about.

I know; many people in the caravans come from out-of-state & even cross-country for the event. My hat's off to them, but not everyone can spare that amount of time and money, or risk a breakdown hundreds of miles from home in the middle of nowhere.

Does anyone know; at last year's meet, what percentage of cars came from the SoCal area - basically Santa Barbara to San Diego, and points inland?

Convenience & cost doubtless figures into many peep's choice to attend, and moving the event to Laguna Seca would take the direct cost from one weekend day and a tank or less of gas, to a couple nights' hotel bills, and probably having to take a vacation day on the front end.

How many sponsors, spectators, and industry journalists would go that far?

I'd probably still go if possible (work can get in the way when vacation gets involved), but it makes it a much bigger investment.

I'd venture to guess a good 80% of the cars that come to 7Stock are from an area where drive time is 3-4 hours or less. Makes sense as the population base in that circumference area is probably comparable to the entire population of Canada.

 

I'm on the opposite side of the field and would guess that at least 75% of the cars are NOT from the socal area. I have driven down 8 hours and got hotel rooms for years, its not that big of a deal.

Just being at Laguna Seca is 1,000,000 times cooler than being in a parking lot in front of a building with the mazda logo on it. I have been to Laguna several times and will be their again in two weeks for MotoGP, and it is a very cool, and very large place to hang out.

Where at Laguna are they planing on having the meet? And could it coincide with a track day? That would be great to see the track full of RX7's. Plus Mazda owns the track.

 

Rather than guessing, I was hoping Bern or someone involved with the event had some kind of hard data on how many people come from where.

Considering the going's-on that reportedly took place at the event hotel last time, I'm not too sure I want to stay at the 'official' hotel.

 

i doubt it, many are locals but they are also the ones who roll in an hour late and park in the general parking lot where the people who drove 100's of miles are the ones who actually made up the event population-wise.

i'd imagine it wouldn't be as large if it was located at laguna seca but it would still be large enough. i personally don't think i would go to that length to be a vendor at the event though, if it is even allowed at laguna seca during a show of this type. so that said others like mazdatrix who were local may not also show due to the trip, but who knows. i just know that it won't be as large as a regular sevenstock or have as much backing from vendors, prizes and generally things to do.. not like sevenstock has gobs of stuff to do(which is what i recommend to the WHiV members to do things people want to do rather than make it a glorified car show), laguna will have one thing most people do want, which is a fast course to drive their fast cars on versus walking around looking at booths buying parts they could do from in the comfort of their own home and looking at cars in person versus pictures of cars.

of course, this removes the personability from the event by showing in person the quality of products they have to offer.

so what does sevenstock really do for people? all it really is is a meeting place for people to meet at a hotel or restaurant and hang out person to person(read as non prostitution ya d-bags). i'd gauge that most people get bored looking at the cars and booths after about an hour, which is why sevenstock will never really be more than a 1 day event unless it expands to do more than just borrow a parking lot and put up some tents and turn it into a visual flea market for the day.

that all said, if they would find a place to host a large BBQ, beer garden, rent a lot for a autocross, get a band, etc, etc, etc. then sevenstock might be something i'd enjoy again, since the 787B is long gone.

 

its a FREE massive event, why complain

 

most of the people i used to go to see on a yearly basis don't go anymore for the simple reasons i stated. is it worth spending $500+ and 2 days driving to see a few friends who no longer go to the show? every year i find a few more reasons(people who don't go) not to go.

eventually it will just be a bunch of die hard older rotary folk with extra cash to blow and local drift kids.

it's only free to the people who live a short distance, keep that in mind.

Yeah but there is no one that has a gun pointed to their head that NEEDS to go to sevenstock. If the event happens, ok. If it doesnt happen, that's fine too.
With the economy being in the dumps, I was really surprised they did the last 2 events.

i'm just trying to help expand the perspective, i didn't take anything against it. sevenstock was originally just a local car show so i always expect that mentality to be in there somewhere.

 

I'm with Karack, after an hour or even less i get bord walking around, looking at all the cars, booths, so on and so forth.

With out other activities going on, a live band, a beer garden of some sorts, and some track time be it autocross, drift, or drag, it is like Karack said people will start to fall out of the whole event and not go just because it is the same thing every year. Its getting old, and every year it is the same old yada yada yada.

I mean take for example, take note of where the food court was? In the back behind the building pretty much hidden, not in the best of locations. Some what change, the locals want it local for obvious reasons. Agree to disagree. But sooner or later this event is going to die due to lack of interest, revenue, funds so on and so forth.

Some just want convenience, while others want to see something new, and experience something new. There is nothing wrong with change, to keep up with the times, sometimes things have to change. Even if that means losing some oldies, to gain newbies. I don't mind or wouldn't mind the drive, but it would have to be something worth trip for me to attend. Like racing, something new to the eye. The whole RC track thing is eh in my opinion and is kinda boring, and the car show gets pretty old too.

either way, there are going to people who will hate the idea of moving if does happen, and others that will be jolly old fat men at an ice cream store because the event didn't move or change venue.

I hope it moves to be honest. Something new brought to the table never hurt.

 

Count me as one of the jolly old fat men at an ice cream store then. SevenStock is the kleenex of Wanklefests. Here in So Cal we get very spoiled what with all the local meets going on otherwise almost on a weekly basis. Why do you think people come from all over the world to attend if it has become so boring?

In comparison, in the Dallas Fort Worth area there is one wankle meet a month. Great group of folks, quality for the most part, but a good turn out is 10-12 cars at most.

That said, it would be great to have some sort of second day driving competition suppliment to the meet. Thus my Autocross suggestion, although I doubt insurance cost and Irvine PD would be happy if it were held in the staging lot. In alternative, how about the course the US/History Channel version of Top Gear uses over at El Toro? Hell, maybe make it a US Top Gear special event! I heard the series was renewed, so...............

 

Something needs to be added to the same old every year event. Whats not to say that he/she is not watching this thread, and reading through the different post's so far.

Add a beer garden, bikini show, something, burn out contest, dyno competition. hahaha

Hozz its just an opinion, different point of view, not trying to knock anybody's opinion. Everybody here has is a couple cents to throw in, and there all good ideas.

You know to hold this event at the Fontanta Drag strip would be pretty nice too. Plenty of open space, parking lot, seating area, and different types of events can take place there in that one location in one day.

 

my suggestions were more for the older members who have seen more than a couple of sevenstock events and the comment about local drift kids being the new venue. you'll always get new blood coming in but for those who will come out every year to see the same cars in the same parking lot with the same booths setup... won't continue to grow that way or keep the attention of people willing to fly out/drive thousands of miles to see it.

 

I know that...same booth setups, same cars, same parking lots won't keep people flying or driving out to the 7 stock events, let alone with the economy, and gas prices, something really has to give, or something needs to be added to this event...

Which seven stock event was it that there was a super super low attendance. There were little to almost no vendors, no roll call, some of the cars including the tricked out black 20b rx8 with the yellow headlights got pulled from the roll call the next year due to the little burn out act he did the year prior. That was crazy, that dude could have hit a spectator or even worse some kid...

That was the same year that falken was out there with there booth displaying the green FD and mustang drift cars...
