when detonation happens the force must go somewhere, if the apex seals remain intact then the engine twists.
you don't need boost to break apex seals, i've seen quite a few n/a's with broken seals.

the engine twists at 8k+ rpm anyway. add boost, and it just enhances it.
i don't think the motor was detonated...probably just caused by a few years of high revving. they are s4 irons.
