NorCal Vacation

So I FINALLY take a week vacation so I can go up to Tahoe and relax, but it seems that hot August nights is going on and everything is booked and too crowded.
I'm looking for a short notice nor Cal vacation spot. I've been to the Ft.Bragg area and down to Monterey, and Napa in between so I'm looking for something new. I work in SF so I'm not going there I'm not a theme park guy at all. Ocean or forest is my park.
Anyone have any sugestions of someplace nice to go for a few days?
Thanks,
Donovan

BTW the 4x4 is almost not required but also not worth the risk getting stuck in the sand.
