That sounds about right for an 85, perhaps a bit above average for a 12A, a little below average for a GSL-SE.

My 91 had body damage much the same way ^ that one did. It doesn't make it any less fun to drive, but I don't think this RX7 is the one you'll want to own long-term. Eventually the body damage will bug you and you'll want another shell. That's ok. Buy this one (assuming its a good deal) find a clean straight shell and swap everything over later on. FC's are great like that they are like Lego's.

 

definitely not worth close to 1k, he is trying to get his money back that he put into parts for the car. the quarter damage is going to be a royal pita to fix, i'd say it's worth no more than $500.

the whole car just looks tweaked like something is still being hidden by how the hood fits and headlight covers are jacked up and not sitting even. at 170k miles most parts are going to start failing just like the engine did. the body work will cost you at least $1500 with paint and another $1500 for a rebuilt engine, used engines are dicey, that is if you pull and reinstall the engine yourself. so you can easily see you will be into the car a pretty penny after it's all said and done.

your best bet is to avoid that car unless you want to figure out how to fix everything on your own or have deep pockets and just really want that car. you can buy a good running turbo II for less than you will have invested into that one after it's all finished.

You may be better off finding something else without damage.

Did the guy seem like a drifter? I'm guessing that's where the damage came from. If that is the case, then you know the rest of the car has been beat to ****.

 

yep, without being able to drive it you also have no idea of any other possible issues with the car like alignment way out due to the accident or busted transmission, busted mounts, etc.

 

I say a good amount of rust on the hood and other parts. His dad told me he took it to school up north and he spun out in the snow. Yea, 1k is not going to happen. I talked it down to 600. I found a rebuilt motor with 8k miles in the FS section. But dude is not replying to his pms. I guess i can wait and buy a decent turbod fc. Thanks for all the help guys.

I keep checking on CL to see if something comes up. Found a FD at a local dealership with a crap load of mileage tho.

 

unless you have money to spare on buying all the little things that break on fd's ( outer door handles, inner door handles, window switches, turbos, ast' etc. ) don't bother getting a super high mileage fd.

 

what, the door handles break? Thats the first time ive heard that. It was a red one. But i think im set on a fc.

I don't see why not, have you actually checked out the car? I'm always skeptic about non running cars 600 is a little hit or miss. I would take someone knowledgeable with you if you can and see the overall condition of the car. Like Ben said, their could be a lot more wrong with the car than meets the eye.


Also for the FD, just consider that everything is 2/3rds more expensive lol add that with a lot of mileage and you have a recipe for debt =P

 

Just throwing this out there Bandar...find a cleaner shell then get a rebuilt motor or buy a nicer rotary to begin with. Big mistake people make is buying a junky rotary then they blame the rotary for sucking. Bought myself a clean TII. Has 70k on the motor and still runs great.

 

Truth. Don't just jump on something you find in your price range.

 

hmm. good point guys. I did check the car out. interior looked good. The only downside was exterior and engine.

 

the door handles actually break more often on FCs than FDs :p

just ask juan how long his brand new drivers door handle lasted. 2 years new i think it was.

 

There is a lot more to a car than interior exterior and engine. Things that could be wrong that you can't see include. Bent/damaged/worn out suspension components, fuel pump, master cylinder, slave cylinder. These are all things you can't test or can't see without lifting/driving the car. Did you happen to see what condition the tires were in? Brake pads?

You won't know if the transmission/clutch is any good since you can't drive it. That could be expensive and at this point is a mystery to you.

Won't know if that exhaust has a 1 inch hole rusted through it. It may not have passed smog before the engine went. Catalytic converters may be ****, which are very expensive unless you go after market which technically aren't "legal".

A car with that kind of exterior damage just spells trouble and debt to me. You're looking at it as a $600 car. By time your done with it, it may be a $6000 car. Good luck getting that back out of it if you wanted to sell it!

If your heart is set on that car and you're not afraid of a big project and spending some cash then go for it!

Just something to think about. I've owned 3 FC's, an FD, and currently own 1 FB so I've been around the rotaries for a while. I was also a Mercedes Tech for 2.5 years.

 

My passenger side interior grab handle was already broken when I bought my FD. 232k miles though, I'm not SURPRISED! haha

 

my fd had 114k and Ive gone thru 2 driver side one and 2 pass side ones

 

When i got into the car everything seemed like it was in good order. The shifter felt alittle weird because it seemed so loose. In my car, shifting from 1-5 is pretty crisp. Also, ill need to bring a battery next time and see if all electrical parts are in order.

Seller says he got the car smogged right before the engine blew. So i got 2 yrs from now to get it smogged again. Which could come up fast if i cant get that engine rebuilt/replaced. Im really leaning to this car being my project car. Im not a drifter or anything but i think itll be fun on the track with some sticky tires.

I was wondering if one/some of u rx7 geniuses can come up and look at it for me. Lunch will be on me.

The only thing that bugs me is that it has a good amount of rust and if the tranny is in good condition. Suspension could be another issue. My first mod for the car was going to be coilovers. Im going to take it slow, first thing first i want it to start up.

 

woah. so, how do u get in the car if the door handle breaks? Do u carry one of the locksmith handles around? Im guessing trunk access? lol
