pfft. that's so yesterday.

btw, I'm completely for this. I'm so sick of almost getting run off the road by some stupid girl with her ear stuck to her cell phone. It's especially scary when I'm on my bike and there's someone next to me who's not paying attention because they're too busy talking on the damn phone.

When I used to ride it was enough to worry about people not seeing you but man, some close calls happen when people were not paying attention and on their phone scarryyy.

not to start a flame war, but a lot of women and old people in general can't drive. Hell, young people too. Screw it, most people can't drive. haha.

Seriously, I've had some really close calls on my bike. If I can come to a quick stop without locking my wheels on a 2 wheeled vehicle, why can't the guy behind me in a mustang do the same thing? They need to make people take a defensive driving course before getting a license. I get so nervous when I ride in other people's cars. Most of them really don't pay attention when they drive. I hate it when they keep looking over at me when they talk to me. It's not like I can't hear them if they talk while looking ahead at the road.

Because bikes weigh what 400 lbs? A Mustang weighs 3,500 lbs? So of course a bike is going to stop a lot faster than a car, less mass to stop. I always feel safe following 18 wheelers because I know I can stop a lot faster than them if a crash happens infront of us. And I like bikes following me because if I need to make a sudden stop I know a bike is less likely to rear end me than a car since they can stop so quick.

that's totally true, but you need to have a lot more brake control on a bike. If you shift too much weight forward, you're trying to stop on 1 wheel. Plus, if you just grab a handful of brake, you'll end up in front of your bike. It's not like I'm a freaking GP racer. I stop a LOT slower than the bike is capable of. Trust me, those guys that lock their brakes behind me are doing it because they 1) didn't pay attention until it was too late or 2) panick and stand on their brake pedal. Either way, they should learn how to perform quick stops before they learn how to go 80+ mph while on a cell phone.

word, I've nearly been hit several times by what looked like 16 year old girls driving SUV's

but I realyl doubt that the "hands free" set up will make the whole thing less distracting, all it does is assure that you have both hands available. This doesn't make you a more alert driver.

Personally, I just turn the music up loud and I never hear my phone ring. I tried driving on the phone once, shifting wasn't so easy, lol.

I doubt that the new law will make much of a difference, it's just another excuse to issue citations and bring more money in.

most girls I've seen, all over the road, or driving erratically were young latin. And these are usually the ones with three inch plastic nails chewing gum and yapping away on their slick new razor phone, running red lights and splitting lanes.

What Icemark said. Start wearing an earpiece or install a handsfree kit in your car and your still perfectly legal.

And, I beg to differ. What is more distracting, talking to someone in the car where you feel compeled to give eye contact, or talking to someone in the car via an earpiece? I suggest the former.

Not trying to argue, but I don't agree. I've never been compelled to make eye contact with my passenger in a conversation. I'm more likely to stray my eyes at a hot chick on the sidewalk than at the person in the passenger seat.

I did that once too. Starin' down this chick in a bikini, traffic came to a sudden dead stop. I was inches from the truck in front of me. God bless the brakes they put on these things.

"never been compelled to make eye contact"

So, you're saying you've never had a good looking girl wearing a bikini sitting in your passenger seat?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

This is the best law I've seen passed since I moved to this state!! It's about time! The fines for getting caught aren't very severe though. You get fined out the *** in Europe for this violation.

Violators will be fined $20 the first time they are caught and $50 the second time. The new law makes exemptions for those placing emergency calls while driving.
So basically it will be in the same realm. The citations are not moving violations, so it will not go on your record.

I know exactly where you guys are coming from. But, to be honest, I think this is a load of bullshit. Those who drive like that are simply unsafe drivers...and its not the cell phone that makes them that way.

Big brother just wants to rear his ugly head and take more control for himself.

I say we repeal those damn speedlimits, and start enforcing more "slower traffic keep right" types of laws to limit stupid drivers. Countless studies have shown that traffic laws structured in such a way greatly improve highway safety.

That would do a hell of alot more good than making cell phone conversations illegal.
