Very expensive, very nice quiet Italian -- Acquerello on Sacramento & Polk

Sorry but that's the only one I know of, good Italian restaurants are fairly noisy and communal by nature.

Can't help with the sushi, I can't stand that ****.

heh, BTW, if the above place is too "fancy" for you, quite a few of the restaurants in North Beach are good (Italian), just walk around, poke your head into a few to check out the vibe. Some are noisy but perhaps the happy communal atmosphere will help you out....

cafe riggio on geary and 6th ave is good and pretty mellow for an italian restaurant. not really a big tourist area though. there are plenty of good places in the north beach (little italy) area, but don't expect them to be too quiet. ive heard really good things about cafe roma on columbus.

as for sushi, there are great neighborhood places all over. my usual sushi stop is a place on california and 5th, called tanuki, but it is definitely not a touristy area. if you want more of a trendy setting, you might want to try wasabi and ginger on van ness or any of the sushi boat type places in japantown, but expect to pay a premium.

have a great trip, and you might be best off picking up a fromers guide or something. also, try to make use of the public transportation, since parking in the city is a bitch.

well looking for sushi then go to Japan Town
plenty to choose from (not to mention quite expensive)

its a touristy area and good "JAPANESE" feel/theme

its on Geary (street?) u go to Van Ness and drive "uphill" away from the pier
then when u see Geary (before that u should see Ellis and Fell, a while back... so u'll know u are on the right track) then turn left on Geary and keep going...

u should see Japan Town to your left.

If u keep driving down, its towards Ocean Beach (which is hella windy and well fun but cold)
and then that is the Richmond District, good food places there (Chinese Food, one or two japanese, and some korean....)

Yeah, lots of good restaurants in J-Town. Try the restaurant "Kitaro" on Geary. Pretty good beef teriyaki and sushi there. Expect a long wait on Friday/Saturday nights though.

Someone mentioned Acquerello. The BEST Italian in the City, but you pay for it.
There is always Bucca de Bepo on Howard @ 4th. Great place, good location (next to the Metreon in SOMA and MONSTER portions for a great price.

My favorite sushi is Blowfish Sushi. Great food, lots of eye candy and Japanimae **** in the background. What could be better?

Good place. Is that the one on Folsom? I think the other one is in the Marina, but not sure. We've probably crossed paths as that is near my girlfriends house and we've eaten there a few times.

Buca's is great, but he said he was looking for a quiet atmosphere...

Actually, I love the atmosphere inside Buca's, it's a good time just sitting in there.

LOL, that place isn't that bad. Then again, I'm not a sissy wine sipping food snob and prefer burgers and fries to dainty haute French cuisine.

If you go to Japan town, go to Isobune sushi boats, fresh, inexpensive good quality, and even you will find something to eat. You get to look at every dish before you eat it. Dave, let's hook up with the girls for dinner some time soon. Carl

Olive Garden is pretty good. And there are alot of them around. Also you get unlimited breadsticks, which are pretty damn good.

if you ever feel the need for a good sandwhich, Little Lucca's on El Camino Real in South City, has the best.
