I just spoke to a friend who is also visiting SF from out of town, and I came up with a couple other recommendations that may or may not suit your tastes. I have taken visitors to these restaurants in the recent past, and they have always seemed to have a great time. I figured I might as well post them up here and in the other SF thread as well.

If you want to check out a pretty fun restaurant in the City (however, it is neither Japanese or Italian cuisine), I would recommend a place in the Mission called Foreign Cinema. The atmosphere is pretty cool, and they show classic movies on the side of a building out in the courtyard seating area. It is a great place to enjoy the warm weather SF has been having lately, and the connected bar attracts some pretty people if you stick around after dinner hours.

If you want to be more adventurous and you get a kick out of seeing gay ****, you may want to check out a place called AsiaSF. Most of the "waitresses" are transvestites, and one of the ones that served my party the last time we went there could actually pass for a real chick. It seems to be better suited for big parties though, so it may not work too well for a date with just you and your girl. But it is a fun place to go if you've never seen a real he-she before, and it really does capture all of "teh gheyness" SF has to offer. A lot of my friends (especially the ones who grew up outside of Cali), including me to a certain extent, are pretty homophobic, and they all still had a good time there.

If you like vietnamese food, I would highly recommend a place called The Slanted Door at the historic Ferry Building. Not only is the food excellent, but the surrounding area offers an awesome perspective of the SF Bay. The Embarcadero strip that the buliding resides on is an awesome place to take your girlfriend/wife for a walk along the waterfront.

Again, I hope you have a great experience in SF. Be adventurous and try something besides Japanese and Italian. There are so many great eats in SF, you would be missing out if you limited yourself to just those two types of cuisine.
