i've never heard of california DMV checking on residency but for the most part they will no longer accept a PO box as a form of residency. stateline in southern nevada has no residences so pahrump is about the closest non smog zone to the border.

officers on the other hand can force you to register your car in california if they have reasonable cause(answer a question incorrectly about your residence or they have seen your car before).

california is tough on out of state plate cars, i remember driving with my friend whos truck was registered in Arkansas and we got pulled over just because he had out of state plates... and it wasn't because the truck was here for an extended period of time, the officer just felt like doing a spot check(some might call it being a dick, but they do have their orders).

as far as i know i have the first rx7 with classic tags in vegas
i had to smog then get classic status. i did it at sahara office they said it wasent a chevy no classic tags. i didnt take no for an answer i went over his head

this law is to allow parade and show cars to function and not rot
it is some what honor on mileage. dont go to dmv Sahara is very correct.
but i do believe it cant be your only car you need a fully registered smoged vehicle as well.

however best solution register in a no smog county cheaper fees and insurance pay the cost of fake residence . if i want to register a car i just go to dmv and buy a tag that's it . or mail it in lol

my offroad rally car needed reg so we figured this out in 06

dont take no for an answer dmv employees dont know the law

Im sure you could do it but I dont know what would happen if you got pulled over with a CA drivers license. You'd have to get a NV title as well, if you got pulled over I guess you could say you were moving to Nevada or you just got back from living there and since you dont drive the car much you haven't registered it in CA yet.

Just got my classic rod plates last week

Had the VIN checked; sat in the fun queue for about an hour; finally got to the nice lady and she processed everything quickly; in fact she mentioned this is the first classic rod plate shes done. Since I had current out of state plates there's no need for smog check. She even asked if I had a preference on plate # which naturally said anything with "FD" but unfortunately they only had numbers...

Glad we have this option!

Vegas for the win. Only 6000 more "classic rods" to go before they have to add another digit to the plate.
